I don't know about your 196 but my '04 203 was a problem. I took a panel behind the seats off but the sender was only 3" below the deck so no way was I getting a new one in there. They wanted $400 at the dealer to replace the sender. I cut a 6" hole through the deck and part of the aluminum seat form. Put in a 6" plastic port with the screw out center and replaced the sender. I am getting new carpet next week and saved the old pieces to glass them back in but have decided to leave the access port in. It is tan to match my carpet and you know the stupid sender will fail again down the road.
