    1997 Cobra Gas Tank Removal

Does anyone know the procedure for removing the gas tank from my 97 Cobra. I was not the original owner and I've been told there never was an owners manual for my Viper Cobra, is that a fact.
    Thanks,
    Steve

That's correct...no Cobra manuals. Your fellow Cobra owners are your manual. It's called a hands on manual! As for the gas tank if you plan on taking it out all in one piece you'll have to cut the rear deck....another good reason why the back battery compartment should have been enlarged a long time ago. http://www.bbcboards.net...77141 Here's the company that manufactured the gas tanks for Cobra: http://www.nextag.com/moeller-...-html PH: 330-405-3688. I'd give them a call and see if the tank can be cut into sections....of course after the gas has been removed from the tank and the fumes allowed to dissipate by keeping the hatch open and allowed to air out. There shouldn't be any sparks because the tank is Polyethylene Plastic but I'd check with Moeller before doing anything like that just to be on the safe side. Maybe you could use one of those Roto type tools???? OBVIOUSLY...CHECK FIRST.

A couple of questions for you though...even if you can cut it out for removal, how do you plan on reinstalling a new tank without major surgery to the back deck? What's wrong with your tank anyway? B-T-W, welcome to the Cobra Forum!!!!

I thought I would be on Easy Street by now but somehow I missed the off ramp!

    Hi Steve

Since your fuel cell is located below your seats, you have to remove the seats and cut out the fiberglass that the bottom of your seats are mounted on. You have to cut the glass out down to the floor though and you can pull it out that way. You "might" need to remove the steering wheel because it could be in the way. I can't remember. I've seen it done many times at the plant but can't remember if the wheel was in the way or not. It's not a hard job to do but it is time consuming. Good luck !!

Man, what keeps happening to everyone's gas tank? In the bass boats, with the tank out of the way under the seats, what could happen to it?

If it's not just the fumes thing, I'm starting to wonder if plastic gas tanks have a LIMITED LIFETIME.

If somebody gets in contact with the manufacturer, please ask what the expected lifetime is on their plastic tanks.
