I want to convert to retractable tie-downs. I have tabs at the bottom of the trailer. Can I install the tie-downs on the tabs? Any advice?

I got tired of having to put my tie-downs in my truck everytime I went to the lake and bought a set of retractable tie-downs. I simply bolted them to the tabs on my trailer....took about 10 minutes. They have worked great ever since.![]()
I was going to bolt mine to the tabs, but I just did not like the way it was going to look. I am sure that it would work just fine. I just drilled some holes in my trailer and mounted them flat, like they come on most new trailers.
I got the Boatbuckle brand and have been very pleased with them.
I would also like to change over to the retractable tie-downs...BUT...
I wonder how well they will still work a year from now after being dunked in the often muddy & sandy water of the Arkansas River, and catching all that mud & sand kicked up by the prop wash from trailering???
Any experiences on this question?
Thanks

I went to the retractable tie-downs a couple years ago. All you have to do is lube them a little every now and then. Like when you add a shot of grease to your bearing buddies or when you fill you oil tank or something. I just bought the Rod Saver brand. They were a lot cheaper.![]()

I have not had mine long enough to say, but I can say that if I fish at least once per week and if I had to replace them every year I would rather than go back to the other type of hold downs. They really save a lot of time and trouble.
Have had mine on my trailer now for over 2 years with no problem & I go to the lake and/or river a lot. I haven't even had to put any lube on them yet. They are made by BoatBuckle.
My fishing buddy has a 216 and his trailer came with them. He fishes more than I do, has to lube them occasionally and they are now close to 6 years old.
Everyone,
Thanks for the information... I am going to mount them to my tabs... I am having corrosion problems on that part of my trailer so I don't think that I need to drill any holes.

Hooknladder, where'd you get your Rod Saver brand ones at? Do you recall what you paid for them?
-
I looked for an online retailer, but can't seem to find one that sells the Rod Saver ones.
-
I found a pair of no-name retractable tie-downs at Wal-Mart for $45, but I'm concerned that saving a little money now, might just lead to headaches in the future.
(Anybody try the no-name Wal-Mart ones?)
motoman....here ya go!![]()

I thought I would be on Easy Street by now but somehow I missed the off ramp!
I bought them at Wal-Mart. I think they were about $45.00 for the pair.
mmmmm......yummy!Thanks Backlash Ar.

-The ones at our Yall-Mart are just some no-name knock off for that price. I'd feel a bit better buying the Rod Saver or the Boatbuckle brand for a bit more.
-Maybe I'll just keep trying the other Yall-Marts in the area.

Thanks for the reply's.![]()
Hey Backlash,
I can't find the rodsavers listed at our wally world either. I did find them on Basspro for $49.99.
Here's the link.

Hi Larry,
Sorry about that. i meant that to motoman. boat buckles are probably a little better than the rod savers as they cost a little more. Thanks again for the signature. It is awesome. Now I am somebody.
-Not to keep churning this thread up.![]()
-But, I went to a different local Wal-Mart and the retractable tie downs this particular store carries, 'ARE' the Rod Saver brand, for $44.99.
-They just don't have the rubber 'gripper' things on the handle that say Rod Saver. But the packaging is Rod Saver.
-I guess it just depends on the store ?
-It's me again, churning up this old thread.![]()

I bought the Rod Saver brand retractable tie downs from Yall-Mart for $45.00. THEY ROCK! I wished I would've bought them sooner. And if you need the 'L' brackets, Rod Saver gives you a # to call, and all you pay is a few bucks for shipping; and they send them right out. I had mine in a couple days.
-The best $45.00 I've spent in a long time.
Doug...Glad to hear that everything turned out for you. Don't you just love it when a plan comes together and it turns out just the way you wanted it too.![]()
