I'm using the 42" and it "blows out" every now and then when the water starts to get rough or from massive boat wakes. If the water you fish is calm for the most part, the 42" shaft will work well. If not, you may want to consider the longer version. The disadvantage to the longer one is that it will protrude higher and may interfere w/ your casts. Nothing that can't be adjusted, though. When mine fails, I will probably end up going with the longer one.

The 201's came with a 45" shaft on Motorguide. I tried a 42" model and found it to be too short for windy days and boat wakes. I also have a 50" model that works great for fishing on main lake when the water is rough, but it tends to get in my way when I am up fishing shallow because I have to raise it up. I am not real familiar with the Minnkota's shaft lengths, but I don't believe they make a 45". I am actually considering having the shaft on my 50" model cut down to 48" and trying that. Other than that, my 45" model works great about 95% of the time.![]()
