    Frustrated...

I have a quick question about my 1992 200hp Evinrude XP outboard. I just completed putting on all the seals and hoses, along with replacing the power pack, plugs, and plug wires. My buddy and I set the timing the best we could, huge difference, and found that the engine really hauls *** in full throttle. But I have an issue that I want to address and get corrected if I can. I do have the OMC manual, but I'm kinda stuck here. My problem is this:

The boat idles fine, but once you put it in forward or reverse, going at a slow speed, the engine cuts off or acts like its going to cut off. I have to press in the choke in order for the engine to not cut off. I'm not sure if this is a fuel problem, maybe possibly a fuel pump or the fuel lines within the engine? Maybe a carb problem? Anyone have any ideas or where I can start to see what the problem is?

What are your RPM's at idle and in gear idle?

I think it was 900 rpm's idle and I'm not sure what it is in gear. Once the weather gets nicer I will double check on that though. What should I be looking at?

The fact that you can push the key in and prevent the engine from stalling tells me that the idle circuit is lean (not enough fuel at idle).

The idle circuit needs to be richened. There is no way to explain to you how to accomplish that task. I would reccomend you take it to your dealer and tell him about the stalling and the fact that if you press the key in it doesn't stall. He will know how to address this issue.

I am also concerned by your comment that you and your friend set the timing as best you could.

The timing pointer should be set first and then the timing needs to be checked at 5000rpm or greater and adjusted to the specification in the service manual.
