    HP for496

Is a 200 HP Yamaha enough outboard for a 496? I have not seen many with less than a 225. In addition to fishing, I will use it to pull tubes and skiers. Thanks Pogo

it will not win any races but should turn a 23 or 24 tempest and see 60 mph.most have 225 and now 250s or the norm. With a 250 75 mph is about the norm.

T O C- speed is not as much of a concern as fuel efficiency (not having to refuel during tx) and not blowing the powerhead towing a tube at 18-20 mph. I was told that the 250 and 300 would be greatly more fuel efficient- up to more than double the distance per tank of gas.Pogo

it all depends a lot on what prop you have, and how fast you run(wideopen is going to suck gas) no matter what HP you have.Is it a optimax or what on it.The 200 optimax will cruise at 40 and get real good MPG.now if you want to run 60 than a 225 or 250 will get better MPG as they will be at 3/4 throtle and you will be wide open so yes they will get better MPG at a certian speed.
I have a 225 opti on the 595 which is rated for any V6 and yes a 250 or 300 opti would get better mpg but at 40 I can go a long time on a 50 gal tank. Now at 68ish Iam sucking gas because Iam wide open ,if i had a 250 or 300 I could cruise at 65 at half throttle and get better MPG.
For tubing a 23 tempest or 23 turbo will work great and still be at 3000 ish rpm just crusing with the tubes.

    I sorry I see it is a yami.Is it a hpdi?

Yes, itis an HDPI. My small old Charger has a Merc- I am not familiar with Yamaha- does this 2003 HDPI have an ok reputation? I would at least like to go 55-60ish- at that speed you can get around LOZ pretty good. Most of our club TX go out of PB2, and I like to fish the North Shore

I've got a 495 with the old ProV 200 on it and it is ok. with the newer HPDI and a 23 tempest you should be fine and run right at 60 I had HYdro Tech put a phase II kit on mine and made it great for skiers and tubing. My new 496 with the 225 Opti isn't as fast out of the hole, but the merc runs about 14 mph faster on the top end. That HPDI should be pretty good on gas if you back off and run 45-50
