How did you know your head gasket was giving you problems? I just spent 2200.00 on mine....

    Re: Ouch.... (06champ198)

Service guy noticed water leaking into cowling. The repair order says they replaced the power head base gasket at a cost of $427. Not sure if this is the same problem you had - maybe if it blows completely you have other problems. I also replaced all my fuel lines and bulb, new belt, etc. So much for adding another Hummingbird unit on the bow. My engine is only 6 years old and the guy who owned it before me fished a lot of tournaments. I personally don;t tend to run it very hard so I am a little surprised at the two problems. The service guy did say the older air compressors were not as well designed as the new ones in terms of bearings. Interestingly, I have owned (3) Cobalt open bows with Volvo engines and I haven't spent $3168 total on the 3 of them between 1994 and 2011. Makes me a little nervous about the Pro XS engine.

If you got a new trolling motor need to take that off the bill. But myself being an Outboard Mechanic (although not on Mercs), had I noticed it during my normal motor inspection, based on your service request, I would have called your first to inform you of the nature of your issue. I would have asked you if it was OK to perform the service, given you my honest opinion if the service was indeed need. Give you an estimate and get the OK. Good way to loose a customer by performing work that is not OK'd that isn't under warranty.

    Re: Ouch.... (08 198 Champ)

I had low water pressure when during a phase when I had an over heat alarm go off. Eneded up being the LU gaskets, but the head gasket was mentioned and scared me to death. On another note, don't baby that pro xs as far as taking it easy. It's a 2 stroke and they are meant to run. Ever run a weed eater? Notice that it runs better, smoother at WOT...same concept. (almost) I run mine WOT ever time I dunk it in the water. NOt all the time to ever spot, but I let her breath at least once every trip. It has around 400 hours and the only think it's had had replaced was a $3 gasket and spark plugs....

    Re: Ouch.... (dukhntr)

Leonard's description of his issue appears to be a PH to midsection gasket leak. To replace that gasket the power head must be removed from the midsection. Don't matter on motor make. The gasket is in the $20.00 range. The $$$ is in the labor. I would have loved to cash that check but I sure couldn't sleep at night or felt good about myself.

    Re: Ouch.... (ChampioNman)

The dealer called me every step of the way and I'm glad I took it to Pro's Choice in Warsaw who has a Merc certified mechanic and is an award winning Merc service location. Had I taken it a marina on Lake of the Ozarks they might not have picked up the other problems which could lead to an even larger bull later. I;m not happy having to shell out that much dough but I am not unhappy with Pro's Choice. I am curious what causes head gaskets to go in general?
