set up and speed question for a 1991 19 ft champion with 200 mercury efi

A friend of mine has a 1991 19 foot single console champion with a 5"-6" jack plate. he is swinging a 25 inch tempest at 5600-5700 rpms. I'm trying to help him get a bit more speed out of it. I think he said he was in the low 60's. (gps) I read most other post here and it looks like the champs like to run about 3 1/2 inches bellow pad. What prop is recommended and motor height? Thanks

If the motor is strong, start at 3.5 below. Watch H2O psi. Get the prop worked. How long has he had the prop on?

He had a 25 yamaha that ran well. I think he had the tempest prop for the last 6-7 years. But I think it is too deep. He bought the boat from my other friend. He raised the motor but lowered it because it chined walked really bad. I'll look at it this weekend.

Raise motor till you lose lift or water pressure, the 25 tempest should be a great.
Then I'm with Billy get the prop worked to get a little more out of her.
He's got to drive the walk if he want to faster.

Raising the motor should have lessened the chine walk. 3.5 below and a GOOD 25P Tempest Plus should be a good combo..

He does need to learn how to drive to PREVENT chine-walking. Don't try to drive "though" it. You can get hurt that way.

10-4, i'll help him out. You guys gave me a great starting point. I should not have taken him out for a 90 mph run in the Ally.

Re: set up and speed question for a 1991 19 ft champion with ... (hchi)

I run a 96 200efi with a 24 trophy which is a 4 blade, the 2.5 liter 200 I found have a tough time spinning the larger diameter 25 tempest plus, that's what I found, I read others like that prop.
You didn't mention what year the motor is, mid 60's isn't bad, it can start costing a lot of $ just to get a few more mph.
Best way would be to slap a new 225 or 250 on it...

Motor was just rebuilt. 2.5 200hp merc efi. I think I fixed his surging/stalling problem. New fuel lines and rebuild pulse pump. So far, still running good. I was thinking it should be in the upper 60's??

    Re: (hchi)

I don't think the champion is getting enough bow lift. It has about 6 inches of set back and is 3 1/4 bellow the pad. freshly rebuilt 200 efi and turning a stock 25 tempest at 5800 rpms. He is going to drop it a 1/4 and see what happens.

    here is a youtube link.

let me know what you think.

    Re: (hchi)

I would lower it 1/4 inch and try it again. It may have to go lower than that. Motor looks like it is kind of high in the video.

    Re: (BILLY)

He is out now. He lowered it to 3 1/2 bellow pad. I'm hoping it will get a bit more bite and bow lift. I'll post another video if I go out with him this week and bring the GPS to see what the numbers are.

    Re: (hchi)

Just a quick update. The boat is running well around 3.5 to 3 1/4 bellow pad. She is swing a tempest 25 at 6150-6200. I'll have him look into a 27 tempest. Getting better bow lift and he can't drive the boat over 63-64 mph. He needs some seat time to learn how to drive/control the chine walking. We have good lift and thanks for all of the advice.

The 200 efi was freshly rebuilt with a little porting done to the motor. Running great and I'm hopping to see this Champ in the low to mid 70's????

    Re: (hchi)

If you want to go larger, try a 26 first, as a 27 may be a bit much for that motor. They are not consistant out of the box, so you may have to try several to get a good one. Took me 3 before I got the best one. If you try a Fury, they are a bit more aggressive than the Tempest. For ex, although I run a 26 Tempest Plus, the best size Fury for my rig is a 25.

    Re: (Lea)

    Thanks Lea,

I was trying to make him buy a "big wheel" so he can give it to me for cheap! I was hoping to drop his RPMs to 5600-5700 by bring him up 2 inches of pitch. I can loan him my fishing prop a 26 trophy, but I'm sure he won't be able to swing my 29 mazco. No idea how a trophy prop runs on a Champ, but we will try it this weekend.

    Re: (hchi)

I know my 190 is very weight sensitive. The difference between me being in the boat by myself and having someone else in there with me is night and day. I can actually drive it faster with another person in the boat. By myself it is real squirrly. I'm running a low hours 200 EFI and a 25 Tempest as well.

    Re: (hchi)

A Trophy on a Champ can be good...especially in rough water. Just like the Fury, the Trophy needs to be one p lower than the best Tempest Plus. A 26 Trophy may do what you want, but a 25, being more aggressive than the Tempest of the same size, might also accomplish lowering the rpms. As a general rule, our Champs prefer 3 blades for best performance, but you really need to continue experimenting.

He may need to send his prop to Mark for work.
