Why are you dead set on another Suzuki?

Compression test, drain lower unit oil and do a leak down test on it. Those are the two things that stand out to me right away but others may have more input.

Have you checked with the guys in the Suzuki Motors forum here on BBC? They might be able to answer questions and point you to another motor...

I think there pretty good motors..They were the first in industry to offer a 6 year warranty on motors. I think just like any motor you buy get it checked out and if you got a mechanic close buy to service it..Go for it..I just think in re-sale value it might be the popular choice but they said that about Honda engines and looks whose following there 4 stroke technology..(Merc,Yam,)

    Err....
I wouldn't touch a 2 stroke zuke with a 10 foot cattle prod. Can't get parts for them, and what few that are available are horrendously priced. Find a different religion, that one won't get you where you want to be.

They make a good engine that never caught on with the bass boat crowd. You can get parts at The Boat Ramp, Port Neches, Tx There may be a supply disruption with the problems in Japan such as Yamaha is experiencing, I don't really know.

Is $1300 a good price for a 98 150 that has had the cylinders re-bored and new pistons put in

I don't know, but you cannot rebuild that powerhead correctly for $1300. The parts and machine shop costs would likely be higher than that, much less labor. I would have a reputable mechanic look at it, and I would definately look into the parts situation before buying.
