    Lower unit Problem HELP!

Hey guys , a coworker of mine has a '87 evinrude 150. Last week he was out in the boat and was running along about 3/4 throttle when the engine revved way up and the prop lost bite. We thought it might be a spun hub but after further review the prop and shaft both spin freely by hand when in gear. In the water with the boat in gear the prop doesn't turn at all. With the shaft spinning freely I am lost. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Check the shift linkage to make sure it did not come disconnected from the motor. Make sure the arms are actually moving on the motor when you shift it. Does reverse work at all?

If all is well with your linkage, you have lower unit problems.

The prop and shaft should not turn freely either on the water or out of the water with the shifter engaged to either forward or reverse. Only neutral. You may want to drain the fluid and check for metal parts.

Sounds as if though someone has a broken driveshaft, they usually go right around the pinion gear area. Check your magnet for metal fragments, you'll probably have some!

Re: Lower unit Problem HELP! (gearcaseman)

last year when i was running down the lake i suddenly heard a crack and the boat came off of plane. no matter what i did i could not get it to engage a gear. turns out when i got home and ripped it off, the pinion nut must have backed off the driveshaft and fell into the gears. chewed both gears up. the driveshaft was actually pretty much gone where the nut was.. matter of fact there were no threads left. id bet thats what you have going on.
