    New Champ Owner!

Well I guess I'm part of a new family now. I bought a 09 cx198 with 225 proxs Friday. I took it out Saturday and fished all day long. I'm comeing from an 18 ft Blazer with a 225 promax , so it was like going from fishing on a 2 x 12 to a sheet of plywood.

So obviously I have a little speed freek in me and need to know what you guys are running for setups and what I can expect. I had 30 gallons of gas, my tackle 8 rods, 2 tm batteries 3 inches below the pad with a 24 p txp ot 4, 5800 rpms and 73.6 mph GPS on a 2 mile run, also ran 72.3 with the livewells full. I think it needs to go down a 1/2 inch because it seemed to be squirty in the seat of my pants and not really planted. Is this normal for this boat. What props are you guys running and what knid of speeds should I be looking for?

    Thanks
    Jeff

I'm running that setup except I have a Yammie. I'm on my second 198 and love it. 3 1/2 to 4 inches below pad is were the sweet spot will be. I've ran 25 pitch Fury's on both boats. I've got a 25 T1 on there now. I've seen 73 on this boat with the Fury with 3/4 load@ 4 inches below pad. It's just now getting broken in, and I think there is more. The most i got out of my merc/198 combo was around 71. Those numbers for you boat seem good, but I would ditch that 4 blade and get a 25 Fury, or 26 Tempest

Dam, those are good numbers with a 198 out the gate. Send your prop if you don't like it Best I have gotten with a 198 225 yammie is 71.6 light. That is running a 25 T1. I have tried the fury and tempest with worse numbers. Congrats and post some pics

Those are great numbers I thinks its interesting the difference in setups for 198/HPDI combos. Alot of guys think 2.5" below pad or even higher and others say 3.5-4" bp. My steering at 2.5 was super stiff at 60 or above so I lowered to 2.75" which helped. My top end is pretty consistent at 71 and change by myself at 2.5 or 3.5. I wonder if should try 3.75" bp and see what happens. I run a B&B'd 25T1. Do you have a good holeshot yet at 4"?

Sorry for the post hijack. Congrats on 198/Pro XS combo . You know we are going to need pictures. I know you'll love it.....I like mine more everytime I take it out.

Welcome to the ChamP family 73+ numbers sound real good but the 25p Fury might be worth a try... I'm still under break-in on my 198 and don't yet have any first hand advice... On the other hand, check out some of these threads that I am studying myself:

(Duane Harper's fastest 198 at 4.25" below pad)

I would say you are there in the speed department I wouldn't change anything with the set-up you have now.
    I would however try a 3 blade,be it a Tempest or a Fury!
The best I have ever seen is 74.5 mph with a B+B'd 25 Tempest with perfect water conditions and a light load. Normal everyday speeds for mine are in the 70-72 mph category with either a 25T1 or 25 Tempest.I like to run my Yammie up high at 2.5"- 2.25" below pad. The Mercs as a general rule seem to run best at 3.25"- 3.5" below.

    Re: New Champ Owner! (Blue198)

Welcome, Sweet boat, I looked one over at the last boat show that was in town,
I'm one of the old school Champ owners on here, 96 202, with a grossly underpowered 200 efi on it, top speed, 35 to 40, depending on what speed restricted reservoir i'm on...
But I do plan on doing a re-power next year with a 225 Merc or thinking about a sho also, then I might even think of breaking the law for one or to speed runs to see what she'll do...
    Enjoy the new ride, Dave
