Looking to trade tandem trailer for a single axle...

I hate to do it but I really think I need to get a single axle for my 198, Ive considered getting go-jacks or something similar but I think a single axle is really the way to go for my situation. Has anyone here ever traded or how would I go about this? Would a dealer swap trailers? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Is it a room issue? Man I've had both and wouldn't own another boat without a dual axle. More of a pain in the shop but just pulls, rides & all around performs better. I've seen a few 203's with single axle & think one of those guys would be open to a trade.

Re: Looking to trade tandem trailer for a single axle... (jefrobie)

We have a 3 car garage with one big door and one small door, I need to put the boat in through the big door and angle it towards the small door side, then I have to push the boat over and get it lined up just right, I have about 3 inches to spare when I get it where it needs to be, it's do-able, but a total PITA with the tandem, just something I dont want to be doing 3 times a week...

I'd be all over it, but my trailer is a little older and used

Go-Jacks will more than fix your problem.

Re: Looking to trade tandem trailer for a single axle... (Cheatham200)

Honestly, GoJaks are the real deal. All they do is turn your tandem into a single for moving in this type of situation. I put both of them on, and crank each four times to raise the front tires in less than a minute. I move my 203 around so easy it's not funny. I back in at an angle, drop it down, and push it 6 or 7 ft. into place. I built 2 "L"s out of 4"X 4"s that I leave on the floor. I leave a couple of inches on each side for the tires and get perfect placement every time. I lower the front axle down which takes another minute, and leave them in place for when I'm ready crank her up and go again. This was my first tandem, and I will NEVER own a single again. The benefits far outweigh the two minutes I spend getting ready to go or when returning from the water.
I wish I had the ability to show you a video of how easy this process is.
One last thing I should add. My Fulton trailer jack was rusted and became hard to crank after ten years of age, so this year I replaced it with a Fulton dual wheel F2. It made the process of moving the boat 50% easier. I should have done it years ago.

Lots of places sell them. Some supply stores (Harbor Freight,Tractor Supply, Northern Tools, etc) also sell similar products. They are not cheap, but they are well worth it and definitely a better option than getting a single axle trailer!

I don't know how the knock offs are. I know they are only half the price. I bought the real thing since I figured I would be using them for years. With that said, Harbor Freight does offer some great bargains, but you often get what you pay for. GoJaks are used for commercial use and most towing companies carry a set. Since you are only using them at home, the Harbor Freight models may work fine. I purchased my GoJaks on e-bay. At the time that was the best price I found, but if that is what you want, search around online and you'll probably find a place that has them the cheapest.

so I bought a set of the harbor frieght jacks and they work pretty good so far, I can push the boat around like my old single axle, just a bit heavier than my 181 was though... They were 80 bucks a piece by the way and they seem pretty solid.

Re: Looking to trade tandem trailer for a single axle... (mikemac10)

Mike, after I dropped my 2004 198 trailer on the edge of the pavement because it only had one axle (two axles would have walked across the drop), I never went back to a single axle. I was trying to make a right turn on the highway from a side road. There was a drop off where the two roads met. My right trailer wheel went off into the drop and my frame scraped. It bent the shock absorber mount and the two rear cross members. I litterally dragged the frame until the tire could roll back onto the pavement. I had to have an auto body shop straighten the frame of the trailer and repaint. In my opinion, the 198 is too heavy for single a single axle anyway.

I now use the go-jaks and have dual axles on every boat since. I have to back in the garage at an angle. The gojaks are expensive but worth it. I couldn't have a boat in the garage without them. When I'm backing in the garage, and once the trailer jack passes the threshold of the garage door, I put on the gojaks, take the pressure off the tires and then unhook and move by hand. Simple enough.

Keep the dual axle trailer for safety and towing ease and get the gojaks.

I wish I had a dual axle trailer, however, my single pulls absolutely fine. I have towed it all over Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma without any issues....

I've got a single on my 201 and have been from the NE to Texas with no problems towing. Aside from the good looks of the tandem axle trailers I can't see a reason to change. Of course I have a C channel trailer too.
