For Pat or anyone else that would know.

Finally ran the 184 last night in a tourny. My ? is I know I need a jack plate but what prop also? It is an 89 184DC with a 150 XR4. WOT it runs 58.9-59.5 @4950RPM and 22psi(water). It has a laser II 24 pitch prop. The reason I know it needs a jack plate is the higher you trim (past what it needs to be when running) the more water pressure I get.

23 Tempest Plus would be my guess. 6-8" Rapid jack, 3.5" below pad. Pat will be along....

XR4, does it have the large V6 gear case or smaller gearcase? Makes a big difference.

It has the small gear case.

Sorry, been without a computer for a while.

Small gearcase is not a good thing, really limits your prop choices. The best answer for that is to send your lazer to one of the really good prop guys and let them work on it.

What about a trophy 24 and I assume the rapid jack Lea spoke of is a good choice for a jack plate.

Rapid Jack is the absolute best choice for a manual plate, bar none.

The worked lazer will outperform the trophy. Stock lazer is junk, but it can be saved by the right person. Contact Mark here on the prop page, or Steve at Steve's custom props at lake fork, either can work wonders on that wheel.

I heard way back then that merc took the small case off the 115 hoping for more speed with the less drag but the smaller case couldn't carry the weight as well. And the next year they went back to the big case. Any truth?

My old 184 with a slightly warmed over 150XR2, small gearcase, turned a 24 mazco chopper about 6k. I never got a gps speed, but it was pretty quick for the day. The chopper didn't carry weight very well, if I had any water in the front livewell it was game over. The holeshot was nothing to brag about but tolerable. It may be worth a shot to try a chopper as a cool weather "fun" prop.

    My $.02

Not many XR4's are still alive with small case, most have left their guts laying on the lake bottom by now.

    Re: (pmgoffjr)

Yup. That's what our 87 did in about 1993. Put a big case on, and it never ran the same after that. Prolly should have swapped props, but I didn't really know any better, and ended up getting a 202 a couple years later anyway. That modified chopper really did run pretty well on that small case though. I'm pretty sure that 184 was a light n dry boat, as it had team champion decals and was bought from a guy who had it as a demo boat for a year. It was sure a fun rig to start a lifetime addiction with!
