    1995 Evinrude Vindicator 200

I've got an 95 vindicator on the back of a 20' 95 Basscat Pantera II
I've recently had the carbs rebuilt with kits, Lowerunit had some seals put in due to water in the lower unit. New Trim Pump motor. and now we poped the heads off and noticed that the pistons were about ten thousands too small... We are going to put a new top end in it... I'll have about $3000 worth of work done to it. What will this motor be worth when its complete... I also have a 25 renegade 4 blade SS prop. reworked with about 10 minutes on it.

What is the average price on a top end rebuild... the hone marks were still on the walls. I'm beleving we will be able to just install new pistons and rings... have to do a little more inspection... I was quoted about $1800 for the top end rebuild.
Thanks. Derrick What is your estimate on a top end job like this...

About 3 grand. No you have to have the cylinders honed to allow for the new rings. If it is clean on the inside a good shop will charge about $15-20 per jug to hone. Just wash it out with soapy H20 before re-assembly, I always coat the jugs with xd-30.

How do you know the pistons are .010" too small if you haven't measured them? I'm sure you know the pistons are tapered and are supposed to be smaller at the top. Don't base a rebuild on the fact you can move the pistons back & forth at the top.

I agree, as posted on another thread, I think I would find another dealer.

Did anyone do a cranking compression test on your engine before it was decided to rebuild? Check your cylinders with an inside micrometer horizontally & vertically for proper size and out of roundness. That's a lot of money to spend and accomplish nothing!

Well guys you got me to thinking... I think i'ma take the boat to 2 more repair shops to get an opinion before i sink 2 grand on it for nothing like one of the post... I'm sure it may need a rebuild but I would rather take the opinions of some others before sinking the money that i really dont need to spend right now... I already sunk 900 in it and then a nother 2 grand... almost 3 grand...
    Thanks for the opinions everyone.....
