2002 was pretty much the transition year from Mtn Home to M'boro. My understanding is that very few boats were built in 02. I don't believe there is a 2002 brochure, either.
I was thinking that was it, but was not sure... Soooo, should one be careful in looking at a 2002 model do you all think![]()
Have you found an 02 model? I have a friend with one of the earliest 206s, but I think it may have been an 01. I will try to find out.
My guess would be to inspect any 02 you find in the same manner as you would inspect any used boat.
Well it's advertised as an '02 model -- trying to get the HIN number to check it out though -- Might turn out to be a late '01 Mt. Home model (TBD)...
Lea -- The HIN number is TSB34399B101 -- I'm assuming that means it's a 2001 and probably a Mt. Home original?![]()
You are right!![]()
I can only hope the advertisement was an honest mistake. Not only is it not a late 01...It's not even close to an 02. It was built in Feb of 01...
Actually most if all the 02s that are out there will be Mtn Home Champs. The plant shut down in Sept or Oct of 01, so the new models sold up to that time were obviously built at the AR plant. I'm thinking that Genmar may have finished a few hulls that were started in AR after they moved the plant to TN. Don't know if those were titled as 02s or 03s. After they went into full production, they were definitely 03s.
As Lea indicated, the one you found is definitely an 01.
Noted guys -- ThanksNow a few more questions:
* 196 w/200 Mec EFI (serial # 0T385596): What kind of performance do you see on a 196?
* Is the gas tank in the rear on the '01 models?
* The boat has a single axle trailer (probably EZ-Loader channel type): safe enough for this rig?![]()
Unfortunately, the 01 brochure does not say, or show, where the fuel tank is..The 223 and the 187 both show an available optional 18 gallon tank which would eliminate the underseat storage, meaning the regular tanks are in the rear. But, since the 196 and 206 do not have that option, I really don't know.
I hope someone will be along about that, as well as the performance....Champ 196 had a newer 196...perhaps he can help there...
The trailers shown in brochure are tube, not channel.
From the pics it's definitely a channel trailer -- Also, it has the aluminum carpet trim & rope insert bumper trim, so I think it was made in Mt. Home right before the 2002 move to TN...
Regarding the performance, searched a lot of old post & there seems to be an opinion that the 200HP lacks a little in the low end (hole shot) on the 196 & that's why the same basic hull was used to come up with the 198 @ 225HP...

No doubt it was built in Mtn Home, but the rope rub rail continued into TN. My 05 has it...and I believe some newer still did. The aluminum carpet trim...I am jealous. I love that. I wish Genmar Champs had it. Classy!!!!
I cannot see the trailer in your picture well enough to determine that it's channel, so certainly trust you. I only know the brochure shows tubular. The new Elites have a choice of tube or channel... My 90 had channel, by a div of EZ Loader called TI. My 99 Dri Doc was tube...and my current one, made by Champion, is tube.
I seem to remember reading about a way to turn a single axle into a tandem. Might be an option, if you decide to purchase...
Talk with Jack (Champer 196) and see how he feels about performance...
BTW, that is one good looking boat!!!!!!![]()
Well the plot thickens Lea... (just phone conversations w/seller so far)
* Seller says his cousin used to work as a glass layer at the Mt. Home factory. Says the cousin's name is Tommy Lace -- I told him to ask the cousin if he knows or knew a guy named Pat Goff?![]()
* Seller says the boat will run 74MPH (light) running a 25p tempest+ & slide-master JP![]()
* Seller says he upgraded the trailer and special order heavy duty (4-layer leaf springs & shocks) -- Says it has disc surge brakes and oil hubs... So maybe the single axle is not a big negative![]()
* Says only 35-40 hours on the engine (lack of use due to health etc.) Asking price seems high to me though @ $19.5/K![]()
Might test drive the boat and reset Max speed on the GPS to see what's up![]()
here is a pic of my 2004 196 with a yamaha 200 efi

Trailer upgrade is a definite plus!!!!! And the low engine hours, too...
Does NADA show 01 prices?
That is a beautiful boat!![]()
Let us know....
Wow, Leeman! That's gittin it!!!!!!![]()
Great Pic -- That's what I call some nice lift & a properly set up 196So do you think the Merc can do that on a 196 with the right prop, set back etc.

Avg. Retail for Boat/Tralier = $12,575
Avg. Retail for Engine = 3,885
Total = $16,460
that merc efi should do it with a b&b 26 tempest plus with extra cup added. 10 inch slidemaster set at 3 inches below pad.
Somewhere in there, the 200 EFIs went from the 2.5 to 3.0L. You can get the question answered on the Merc forum. Being an AR boat, the tank will be in the back.
NADA's Avg Retail is a starting point. Price could be +/- depending on condition (cleanliness) of the hull, motor condition, electronics, and the local market. Last one I sold brought a little more than Avg Retail. I also believe the price of new boats may have caused clean low time used ones to hold a fairly high value.
