    Trailer lights issue

Having an issue with the running lights on my boat trailer. Brake lights and turn signals work just fine but when I turn on the running lights they come on for a few seconds and then go off. If I try turning them off and back on nothing but if I wait a little bit and try again I get the same results. I replaced the ground connection at the ramp the other day but with the brake/turn signals working I do not think it is a ground issue. Could there be a chafe in the running light wires and the exposed wire touching bare metal causing this? If so will a test light work on he wires in front of the issue even with the lights coming on?

Howdy Woo for start check wiring from pig tail thru the front tube of your trailer, if not covered by a split wire loom, can cause the wires to get rubbed to short wire to metal. Also the individual wires to marker lights and there respective grounds. test light can test the ground and power wires. use of quick clip wire connectors* are not good to use.. Best is butt connectors and heat shrink tubing, and split wire looms to cover wiring to prevent the chaffing of wire. Trailer Wiring Diagrams | etrailer.com .< click on this for wiring diagrahms

    * pic of often used but not good for long term and if used 1st Problem will find later is these quick connects.

A standard light tester will work. I had one marker light go bad and BassCat was nice enough to send me all 4 replacement lights versus just one. The problem area for me was the wire connection at the light fixture. Mine would also come on intermittently as I drove down the road, or just after dropping into the water. Heat shrink connectors (butt connectors) are well worth the cost. In addition I put heat-shrink wrap tubing over the connector (slide onto wire before connecting ) so it has double shrink wrap. Some boats use a smaller diameter wire on the marker lights...try to find heavier wired marker lights.

BTW: This tool is well worth the money: http://www.amazon.com/Klein-Tools-11...=wire+stripper

Thanks for the replies I broke out the tester and was having trouble getting anything at the plug on the truck so just to be sure I popped the hood and started checking any fuses related to tow/trailer. All looked good but when I went back to test the truck trailer plug all was well. Plugged in the trailer and bingo everything light up and stayed running so I am guessing reseating the fuses must have solved it (fingers crossed)

Yep that split loom can also get weathered and become brittle and fall apart. best to inspets it and replace. I got some from O'riellys fairy cheap.
