    Repower

I'm looking into repowering my 1996 Champion 202, I'm currently running a Mercury 200 efi, the motor is still running fine, but I'd like to upgrade to a 4 stoke to be able to fish Diamond Valley Lake, they only allow 4 stokes or 3 star compliant motors.

You might check out the new optimax's I can't remember if they are two or three star emissions!

The brochure says 150-275 hp...but I would check weight....Your boat is already low in stern due to fuel cell in rear. I happen to like the nose-high attitude, but I would compare weights on 4 strokes .... Are Optis and HPDIs not 3 star compliant? I have not looked into that...

I think in Calif. it's has to be a optimax pro, they arn't allowing the stright opti's here.

Since you already have the Merc controls I would have to look real hard at the 225 ProXS since they are 3 star rated.

I have a 202 with a 225 opti ona 8 inch plate. I would not want anymore weight on the rear. If you can use the pro xs then go with it. Also, your hole shot will be better with the merc, it is like a rocket

The 225Pro XS is (3) star rated, and only weighs app. 505 lbs. A real work horse.

Putting a 4 stroke on the back would just be...wrong.

    Re: Repower (DaveH)

a 200 efi weighs around 425 dry. I am trying to sell my blown one. I had to know the weight for shipping quotes!! the weight difference would not be any diff. than going from a 24v to 36v system w/ adding a battery! I would go XS!!!

    Re: Repower (DaveH)

That hull was designed to run the 3.0 motors, which weigh a good bit more than that 2.5 200 does. But still less than a DFI motor, which weighs less than a lawn mower...err...four stroke.

The 225 XS opti would be my first choice, given a choice...it passes the star test, and will make that hull run like it was built for.

    Re: Repower (pmgoffjr)

So what 2 stoke would work thats 3 star, the boats always wanted more power, speed tops out at 60 with a 4 blade and empty, but in so calif. there's no lake that allow speeds over 45 anyway, do, but, ticket and the hassle.

    Re: Repower (DaveH)

Too bad cali is so restrictive. I have a stock 225 opti on my 202 and I hit 71.4 Sun with 2 men and all our gear in 90 temps The 225 pro xs would be my choice like Pat stated. If you cannot go any faster than 45 then get a party barge

As stated above, the 225 ProXS Opti is 2 stroke and 3 star rated...

    Re: Repower (DaveH)

Hey dave....two stars are fine on DVL or skinner. You don't need a three star rated motor...the 2 star opti is fine.

If you think 45 is a bad speed limit, Its 25 MPH at Diamond Valley
