champion bad start

Hey guys,I have a 1990 dc 18' w/ 175 black max.My question is I put a rapid jack 6" plate on it and seems to work fine but I have a real hard time getting up on plane from a stop now. It used to pop right up. I am guessing it is a motor issue and not from adding this plate?That is the only thing I have changed since last year,and it worked fine last year.I also drained the carbs and put fresh gas in at the start of the season. I just want to cover all bases before really ripping into it.Thanks,mike.

It maybe that your motor height is not right...

Would lifting it an inch or two do this?

yes...you need to check motor to pad height...start at 3 1/2 inch under pad and go from there

Would it also make the motor bog and run like sheet? I started at 3.50 and moved it up from there,got more speed out of it as I raised it. All the way down in the slots on the plate is 3.50 pad height.So this is where I should stay? I thought plates were susposed to gain stability and speed? I mean somtimes it wont even get up on plane. Somtimes it goes 50 yards before it will even start thinking of getting on plane. So this is normal? Thanks a ton guys for your help!

You may be getting water in your motor due to it setting too low... that would make it certinly not run good....

I don't know much about this stuff, but I had a similar problem and it turned out being a loose spark plug wire. Had a hard time getting on plane simply because I didn't have the power without that one cylinder firing.

Holeshot is A or B...

A is really slow, no rpms, bogging down, a slug

B is spinning (cavitating) out and setting down.

If it's A, start pulling plugs out of the prop until it responds, if it's B then start putting plugs back in.

You might have a rubber clutch in the prop slipping, stopped up check valves in the intake manifolds, or need cup in your prop. Good luck let us know what you find. Bobby Mc

Took apart and cleaned the carbs,fuel pump,tank and replaced some fuel lines. Did not find anything dirty on broken. Checked compression, 118-120 across all cylinders. Have not run it on the lake yet(just ear muffs),but will let you know how it goes.Also took pats advice and pulled the plugs on the prop. I just hope I can run this thing without the motor all the way down on the plate. You would think I could have it up more than a 1/4 " on the plate without loosing a ton of holeshot. As of now,it takes 100 yards to get it up on plane! Yikes! Later,mike.

Well guys finally got out today to try it since the carb cleaning and prop plug removing. It pops out of the hole much better now, I think pat was right with the plugs. I took all three of them out. Is that to many? Should I put one more back in? I thought I heard somwhere not to have all three out? Thanks again guys,mike.

It's all about the results, if it cavitates (spins out) then you've got too much venting, if it bogs down, too little.
