    Start some s*&t

I really wish Champion would walk over to the Ranger side of the Genmar office and borrow the cover and trailer technology from Ranger. My Aurora cover is not great and I REALLY like the rock dings with rust all over my trailer. A little "road armor" maybe?"

It would be a long walk as ChampioN is in TN and Ranger is in AR.

    Re: Start some s*&t (ChampioNman)

I will agree with you that the Ranger cover and Road Armor are very good products that really do the job, I am sure it is a matter of time it will trickle over to Champion, they started using road armor on stratos. I will say that Legend uses a spray on liner on there trailers as an option, just like they use in truck beds. I think that would hold up better than road armor, mine started to rust around swing away tongue..

I have a freind who ordered the gel coated fenders on his Legend and the rock pits were awful. Big chips all over the fenders. I will take paint that I can fix myself or maybe a Line-x coating.

    Re: Start some s*&t (Gunnar)

Mike Bristow at North Texas Fiberglass told me that he would do it if he had a trailer needing refinishing. Drawback is you couldn't pin stripe or put your ChampioN decals back on it.

I've got some rust spots that need to be fixed myself. I can get a body shop to fix the rust, they just don't want to repaint it. What I need is somepone with an electostatic paint system.

Anyone ever done that on trailer ? I have been thinking about it (along with new bunks) but not sure how it would look and how difficult it is to do ? Have to be a winter project though so as not to distrub the fishing season and then there is the problem of where to keep the boat while conducting the upgrade

Re: Start some s*&t (Tx Champ)

I was just discussing this same trailer issue with my dealer this past week. I wish the quality of the trailer did match the quality of the boat. The trailers are not bad, but I wish they had some type of protective coating on them.

Thanks - Not sure I would pull the dimond plate off -- Never rust and mine's rivited on as are most ChamP trailers -- Also the wheel fender on that photo looks like they got the Line-x on a little too thick... I'll have to think a lot more about doing something like that, but he seems to have gotten a good price at $400...

    Re: Start some s*&t (Gunnar)

I have an old rusty Dilly trailer under my 14' aluminum boat and I'd like to put Line-X on it. But for $400 bucks, it will probably just get a coat of white Rust-Oleum.
    I'm pretty cheap.

    Re: Start some s*&t (Busboy)

Could'nt agree any more with Steve! Genmar uses road Armor on Ranger and on 2008 Stratos trailers. The Champs and Stratos are built in the same plant. I may be wrong but doesn't their boat pricing structure follow 1. Ranger highest price, 2 Champion, and 3 Stratos?

If so: Champ should surely should use Road Armor trailer designs.

When a person gives Genmar cash via a Champ purhcace; one would think top shelf trailers would be included with a top shelf boat.

My ratings so far are A+ boat, C for the trailer.

Re: Start some s*&t (bassin butch)

As we speak, Champion is looking for a protective coating for our trailers. Road Armor is Ranger/Stratos.

Although Champion, Stratos and Ranger, and the other brands, all fall under the Genmar "umbrella", they are different companies. Even though Stratos and Champion (and Hydro-Sports) are built in the same building, Ranger and Stratos both come under one management/company...Randy Hopper is the president. This is why some of the Ranger trailer features are found on the Stratos trailers.

Champion is an entirely different company. Don Wood is our President.

Genmar is a holding company. The various brands under the Genmar name are all separate companies, each with its own processes, patents, and budgets. Quite possibly, Brunswick operates in the same manner...Mercury, Triton, etc, etc..

It can get confusing .... I do not pretend to understand all the "ins and outs" of the holding companies. I don't have a "business head". I find it easiest to just remember that Champion is its own company. And don't worry, we'll get protected trailers, too....

i was just looking at my 196 and the rust is ALL OVER, I was thinkin about getting all redone but i figured it was cost a couple g's? does that sound right? I mean the only way to get rid of rust would be to get rid of the piece thats rusting right?

I would think you could have the trailer sandblasted without the boat on it. If needed I will do that then prime and paint it with automotive urethanes.

"Champion is an entirely different company. Don Wood is our President." OK Lea I understand.

Hey Don, how about replacing the trailers? Looking at the purchace price paid for packages by far the vast magority of cost is in: the Motor and next the boat (resin cost increases). I'm sure trailer replacement would be painful but not nearly as much as other possibility's.
