    looking for more power

I have a 115 Mariner on my 171 Champ, It will do about 55 mph with 1 person 3/4 tank of Gas 52 mph 2 people. The boat, however is rated for a 140. I was wondering what I can do to the motor with out messing up its reliability, to get some more power out of it. I would love to break into the low 60's anybody got any ideas.

    Um...well...err...
You're sorta screwed with that motor. There isn't much you can do to a 2+4 to make it run any harder, they just are sorta plug along motors, don't want to rev very high, and don't respond to the same mods as a v-6 will.

I'd keep my eye open for a 135 V6 someone wants to sell. Then you've got something with potential.

Re: looking for more power (DOUGMCGEE187)

Friend of mine has a 171. His original motor was a 135 carbed merc. He ran in the upper 50,s light and 55-56 loaded. He blew up that engine an got a 135 opti. He does not run as fast with the opti. 55-56 light and low 50's wit heavy load. Hole shot is slightly better with the opti. He was surprised to see the poor performance on the same set up.
You sound like your running good with the 115. I would leave well enough alone. If you want to run in the 60;s it is gonna take a bigger boat with more ponies if you stay legal

How much do you think he would want for it? What year and model is it?

Be happy! I have a 99' 171 Champ with a 90 hp Merc. It only does 45mph, and the hole shot is horrible. I just bought it a year ago and already want a bigger motor, so i understand where your coming from.
