Auto Bilge Not Coming On (Well Kinda)

I have a bilge connected to a float device (which makes it an auto bilge right?). The floater will not kick the bilge on by itself (& I know there is plenty of water in the bilge area). However, if I flip the bilge switch at the driver console on and then off quickly, the bilge will come on and STAY on until fully drained, so I know the float is working just not kicking the bilge on to start with. Sounds like a dirty floater? Any thoughts. Thanks to all, you have been such a help in the past.

How long have you had the boat? Did it ever work the way you think it should?
My opinion is the switch at the counol needs to stay in the ON position and the float will shut the pump off when the bilge is empty. anyway that is how mine works.

    DJ,

I have had the boat just a few months. I just discovered recently that it even had a floater in the bilge area. I found that it was unplugged from the rear panel in the battery compartment (disconnected by previous owner I can only assume-probably quite working for him so he just unplugged and made it a fully manual bilge?) So, I plugged it in and sure enough it works, just not as I see fit. If I turn the bilge switch on at the console the bilge will run consantly (and I can see that the bottom bilge area is dry as I have full access to it now).

Should the floater be secured to anything or just floating? It currently is NOT attached to anything. If it just floats around how does it tell the bilge to kick on?

I don't have a clue what your set-up is. My float switch is an intergal part of the pump. I just leave my consol switch in the ON position and the pump takes care of itself. If I shut the master acc. switch off everything (including the pump) is dead.
