    starting problem

I have a 1995 Johnson 150 Fast Strike. When I go to start it I hear a clicking sound coming from the motor when I hit the key and if I keep hitting the key it will finally start. I may haft to hit the key 10-15 times then it will start right up. Also it doesn't do it all the time, sometimes it will start when I hit the key. Could it be the key switch or something on the motor. Thanks Rick

It sounds like you have a heat spot on the starter. Everytime you hear it click it moves the winding a little and once you get away from the spot it connects. If you stop the motor off the spot it will start right away the next time. I would have the starter checked. I would first make sure your battery is holding and you have enough amps to kick the starter in.

    Hope this helps.

Sounds to me like the solenoid isn't hitting every time. Check starter by bypassing the solenoid, if it cranks or turns over everytime get a new solenoid at your dealer. The marine solenoids will rotate to a new position every time.

You can bypass the solenoid by jumping from 1 large stud to the other large stud on the starter solenoid, if the starter hits, replace the solenoid. Make sure all the grounds on the engine are TIGHT and CLEAN. Check all of the battery+ supply post and terminals, make sure they are TIGHT and CLEAN.
