installing spark plug in evinrude 225 hp model E225FPLSSC

I read your instructions on indexing plugs before they are installed ,I am taking this to mean,Taking a permanent marker and making a line on the plug so when you install it it will end up in the B zoneI noticed there is a small hole next to each plug hole where it is tapped out for the bolts to go in,could you use that hole as a guide to the b zone ,As I am standing behind the boat and motor looking towards the front of boat,I take it the left side is port side and right side is starboard side using that idea,could you help me locate B zone to install plugs,maybe like using a clock face with numbers one through twelve ,In other words the diagram you sent me to look at by using the clock face idea,It looks like A zone is about 11:00 oclock to 2:00 oclock, index line at 3:00 oclock and zone B 3:00 oclock to 6:00 oclock and C zone is about 6:00 to 11:00 oclock, now where would the perfect B zone be located using the clock reference? Or is anywhere in zone b the perfect area? The description I just gave is looking to front of boat from behind motor, or port side. Is this correct? Can you give me guidance from here? If this is correct, then starboard side I take it has to be exact opposite, using the clock face idea, what would b zone be? I apologize and hope Im not sounding to stupid or confusing but Im a simple person and this seems to be the only way I can figure this out to get it straight in my head. Thank You Cephas

The picture is of the port head on a 60 degree engine. Yes if you are standing behind the motor & are looking at the bow, the left side is port.

Look at the box that the spark plugs came in. It will show you that the crush collar is designed to tighten fully in a half turn. So with that in mind & what you read. If you hand tighten the spark plug it will need to be opposite of the correct area before it is tightened/torgued or it will not work in that bank of cylinders.

That is the deflector pin. You can see it in the link you were looking at. If the line on the plug is 90 degrees of either side of the deflector pin it is ok but the closer the line is to the pin the better off you will be.

There is an easier way to index the spark plugs, without the book, but I really don't have the time right now to type it up.

This is why I need to use the clock idea for me.you say ninety degrees either side of pin is okay ,but when I look at the diagram anything above index line is zone A. Is index line or end of threaded bolt hole hole at 3.00 oclock? using clock idea where is perfect Zone B,Would it be 3:00 oclock on port side?, If it is at 3:00 oclock on port side,would that mean B safe zone is from 3:00 to 5:30 and if that is correct would that mean perfect B zone it would be 9:00 oclock on starboard side? Is acceptable Zone B from 9:00 oclock to about 11:30 oclock?on starboard side? I just looked on the sticker and it says 8/99 and I said 2000 for the year of evinrude motor,stick with me dont get upset I have a comprehension problem thats all.

I realized now that the hole you were talking about may not be the deflector pin. Your injector tip,index line & deflector pin on the port head is between lets say 4&5 o'clock on the port & between 7&8 o'clock on the starboard. The picture is different because it is of a different engine (135-175hp). For reference purposes the tstat housing is 12 o'clock. I always reference the injector tip location rather than the pin because not all engines have the divit for the deflector pin.

I just got off the phone with you so I posted this just incase you needed it again.

This maybe a little late but here goes and it might make indexing your new plugs a no brainer. The only catch is that the plugs currently installed must be already indexed.

1st, mark the plugs that's already in the motor to the motor so you know exactly where it's sitting. If you know where the injector is, try to use that point to mark the injector, but it won't matter.

After you pull the old plug, you now have a reference point for your new plug. Take the new plug and mark it so it matches the old plug. Now install the new plug so the mark on the motor matches the mark on the new plug. Just remember you might have to try multiple plugs to get the proper amount of torque to get the marks to line up.

If you do enough of these and pay attention to how the marks line up to the plug, you'll know where the injector is.

Hey John and Dae (thank you) (very much),I got the plugs in correct.
I went to try and start it no way would it start, I could not smell gas, so I checked theGas pump bulb it was tight as a drum, you could not squeeze it at all it was full,For some reason I read somewhere in here somebody spraying a quick shot of mixed gas in carburetors,So I did that and turned key and BAM before I could let go of key it started, in the same second I shut it off, put the water muffs on and it has started six times let it run a minute or two each time,well that sure doesnt mean it will start tomorrow, but thanks to you I have learned something a lot of outboard mechanics havent even heard of (Indexing) Im sure you guys have been thanked before,but I want to personally thank you guys who are on here helping others,you are doing a great service,THANK YOU Cephas
God I hope this thing will start from here on out
Well, I just now went out tosee if the motor would start one more time ,it wouldnt

You may have a cranking speed or other issue. The injectors may not click/fire if they do not get good enough juice on startup.

Hey,I think this is very possible I left the 10 amp battery charger on for 5 hours, started up, shut it off would not start, charged battery some more it started up again.I have a #27 -750 cranking amp battery in there now ,I was reading another article and I think it said a 29 series 1000 amp Is that correct,Hopefully this is the problem,Thanks again,When I can afford it I will get it and get back to you and fill you in on if thats the problem Larry

Group27 -800-1000 CCA should be good but bigger would be better.

CCA (Cold Cranking Amps)
CA (Cranking Amps)
MCA (Marine Cranking Amps)

Some different ratings you may see on the battery. They are different.

Make sure your battery termianls are clean & tight. & no wing nuts.
