Use a size "D" 2.25" ball. Anything less wont hold the large units. While at it, buy a RAM wrench to help tighten the arm. It is money well spent. They make a specific 11"x3" wide base to fit the gimbal of your unit. There are also two arm lengths depending on the reach you need. Look for part numbers that start RAM-D-111. The wrench is part RAM-KNOB9H.

I used the Ram 2.25 with my HDS 12. I'm using a Quick Slip designed by Dave Hasty and a couple other guides on the Great Lakes that replaces the knob assembly. It holds TIGHT! So far my only complaint is when you release it I have to bear hug my HDS to keep it from toppling over because it won't release from the bottom unless it's all the way backed off. Hope that makes sense. You can see it at Quick-Slip.com.

I may try the knob and see if I like it better? I've had a couple of guys warn me to make sure the knob was good and tight!

You mounting it on the front or back? If you can use the metal L shaped bracket.

sorry for jumping the tread......but does a ram mount have less of an impact from waves(shuting off due to the impact) then your traditional humminbird stock mount?

your unit shouldn't shut off due to any impact unless you have some loose connections somewhere

i use a shock guard under my arm since its the longest offered. up front i chose to not use a ram

use an 1/8 inch rubber base to absorb some impact will help just saying . You can make one out of sheet rubber from a local hardware store.

I use a Ram Single Swing Arm mount at the console and a Kick'n Bass bracket at the bow for my 1100 series Humminbirds. I used a piece of a rubber mouse pad under the Swing Arm mount.

    RAM-109HU is available at gpscity.com.

I used 3M 4200 to secure the nut under the main base in case you want to disassemble it after it's on the boat. I let it cure overnight before installing. I saw this tip on the web somewhere.

I check the knobs for tightness after every trip and the mount is rock solid. Both mounts keep my HB's from moving in the rough stuff!

Just remember with the swing arm mount you need an absolutely level spot to mount it or the gimble will not be verticle. And the wrench is more for loosening the arm to move it. That thing can be a PITA to loosen after it has sat for a while.

Should I run my power wire to my fuse panel or direct to the battery with an inline fuse?

Run the wiring direct to the cranking battery with soldered and heat shrinked connections and the inline fuse. Use 14 gauge or 12 gauge wire. Don't skimp with this or you'll be over on the Humminbird forum posting how your Humminbird sucks!!
