    The importance of the Pre-Filter

Well if you have been monitoring the Yamaha board you would know alot of people have been having problems with maintaining their RPM's. My boat is new this year and I just passed the 45hr mark. At 44 hrs I noticed the boat was sputtering and then I would die down to 4500rpms. When I first run it in the morning or when it has sat for an hour or so while I casted it would take off strong then again die down. I was puzzled...... My first thought was spark plugs, so I pulled them, and low and behold they were filthy, actually had chunks of carbon built up on them. So I replaced the $7.50 a piece plugs, then ran the boat with high expectations, F*$(*%ng piece of Crap...... thats what I screamed....

I took it this morning to my local Yamaha service station, they said park it, and we will start looking at it on August 22nd... WTF! Two weeks to look at it, two weeks to fix it, two weeks to call me and tell me it's ready I know how it goes....

I decided to try something sort of sneaky.... went and talked to the tech. HE remembered me from past visits, don't know if that is good or bad , he walked out and looked at it with me, and I explained the symptoms. Right away he said you have something in your VST. He said the particles drop when it sits for a while, then they get sucked up into the filter. He says "Eric you can fix his yourself if you want, besides this isn't warranty work, Yamaha will say something was in your gas, or gas tank". He then explains to me how to do it. I remembered the post on the Yamaha board about changing out the fuel filter in the VST tank. The one with the pictures...... Well, I just got done doing it, total time was about 1/2 hr, and yes there was a bunch of black crude, or dust in the bottom of the tank. I have not run it yet, it is raining out right now, but I am watching the weather and will be heading to the bay here shortly to see, but I honestly think I got it. '

He told me if I had a pre-filter (raycor) installed this would not of happened. He said this is the big down fall of Yamaha versus Merc. He said yamaha's on board water seperator doesn't do a good job of filtering out this fine enine dust, it just barley helps seperate the water. He said if I had yamaha's pre-filter, or a raycor installed from the get go, I would have never had this problem. Sooo.... I just bought one and will be installing it, this next weekend.

Point being, if you don't have one, it only cost $40. Looks like to a half way mechanically inclined person it will take about 1/2hr to fully install. That is super cheap insurance to prevent what just happened to me. The gasket I had to buy for the VST tank cost me $35 as it is, spend the extra $5 and get the preventative maintenance, I highly recomend it, you might not have a nice mechanic as I do.

Re: The importance of the Pre-Filter (EJP)

YIP, I went through all that mess about 1 month after I bought mine. My biggest complaint is that if Yamaha knows you need that filter, THEN WHY DON"T THEY REQUIRE IT TO BE RIGGED WHEN YOU BUY THE BOAT. Just another way for a company to get your money. Other than that though, the hammer has been good to me!!

Re: The importance of the Pre-Filter (EJP)

Hey EJP it is probably something simple. Sounds like it is still starving for fuel.
The 250xs's have had they share of problems also. The new motors no mater who makes them just has to much on them that can go wrong. I would love to go back to the good old days when all you had to have is a carb. cleaning ever so often, new plugs, and a water and fuel pump! Now day you need all kinds of cratp (DDT, Laptops, software) just to start to trouble shoot the problem.
Hope they can get it fixed the first time in.

Re: The importance of the Pre-Filter (EJP)

I asked Keith at Blazer about the fuel/water seperator because I was going to get one for my new boat they are building. He told me that they are installing them now and that he had run into a problem before on a Yamaha 300 that would run good on one tank and not the other because of water. After he installed the seperator he had no further problems.

Re: The importance of the Pre-Filter (wbass68)

David Chester told me the other day on the phone all boats are getting them now. He doesn't know how mine left the factory this year without one. Dave has said they will look into helping me. I hope they do......
