    Long alarm & check engine light, 98 Fitch 150 hp

    First off I'm posting for a friend and don't have serial or model. It is a Ranger and Evinrude 150HP used in the 98 Classic if that helps. He showed up at the ramp to help in our Jr Bassmaster Tournament and the starting battery was dead. We jumped with automotive booster cables to a trolling battery. Motor started and voltage steady climbs on the Lowrance 332 but he got a long solid alarm for about 45 seconds then it goes off but the check engine light stays on. Boat started and ran fan all day other than that. He charged the starting battery all night though the Evinrude had charged it pretty well even in the short amount we used the big engine's that day.

    Today it started fine all day but still ge tthe light and solid alarm everytime the motor is started. It last for 30-45 seconds then goes off. Again the light statys on?

    Voltage is 12.3-12.6v motor off and will go to 14.8v with the motor running.

    The reason for the dead battery is the 2 lowrances seem to draw even while off. They are wired direct and we hear the gps antenna's will always draw a little? Boat was off the water for 3 weeks.

    Check the fuel water seperator, replace with a new one. Voltages look good, but if the filter gets3/8" water in it it sets the check engine light and is the most prevailent cause of the light to activate with no throttle reduction.

    Thanks again, He was going to look into that but we always feel better after one of you guru's set us stright.

    As for the dead cranking battery these engines will draw power when they are setting idle. My 150 ficht was drawing my battery down when I didn't fish for a few weeks so I put in a on and off switch in the hot line from the battery. As for the code horn and light I would take it to a evinrude dealer and have him hook up their lap top and see whats going on.
