I will reserve my final judgement after some real world results. But what I have seen so far Yamaha gets a a very favorable grade.
1. 4-Stroke weight reduction: A+++++ (as in WOW!)
2. Performance reports: what I have read so far, A
3. Ingenuity: (typical Yamaha) A
4. Looks/Sound: B+ or A-
5. Applicability to the bass-boat world: A+
The weight reduction is what makes me VERY Happy. I really hope Darris can put down his Mercury Flag long enough to give this motor a FAIR shake. I think this thing will be OUTSTANDING on the XB21 Series and the new 23-24ft Sportboat. Something the Verado is not capable of doing due to its rediculously heavy weight.
I am sure if he doesn't, the crew at C&O will. Yes, too heavy for a XB2002 but maybe Yamaha is working on a smaller V6 or V4 Version that will work![]()
At 505lbs it is borderline for the XB2003/XS2003. I am sure it would work, but the weight would kill the warrantyWith the EPA's stupid agenda I really think the SHO can breath "new life" in the future of Allison boats as well as other makes). I just hope it has the typical Yamaha quality and durability.

Man I hope Not
I Drive a Allison because I can Drive a Allison
Y'all can be haters all you want.
I think if you were take a poll most people correlate Yamaha with quality.I hope Darris DOES give this motor a try...it would be awfully narrow minded if he didn't

Competition breeds innovtion. Maybe this will get Mercury off its butt and re-evaluate the Verado'a applicability for the bass-boat market.
This is one of the funniest threads Ive ever read...![]()

I give it an F...![]()
Darris will keep the Merc flag flying. The Yamaha flag wil remain at half staff (unless it gets some help from Nixa, Mo)
I believe the likelihood that Darris will become a Yamaha fan is about equal to the possibility he will ever place a decal in his boats recommending anything other than to underpower it and be happy.......LOL
The Red Sea is about to collapse on the Roman (Mercury) Legion...![]()
Rob..an F??? Dang you are harsh
I NEVER said Darris becomeing a "Fan" I meant some real testing and evaluations. Like I said...if he doesn't I am sure others will

I just look at ANYHTING that helps the outboard segment of the bass-boat world as a positive thing. You guys can keep on hating....![]()

Frist of all I do not hate Yamaha. I just know what several friends that sell and work on them have told me and what I've seen personally with several of the pro's in our area that changed to Yamaha due to the tournaments they fish.
Darris is pretty open when it comes to engine manufacturers. They were big into OMC's years ago and has tried Honda's and Ficht's in the past. If he found an engine that better suited his boats, you can bet your last dollar he'd be recommending it.
He would be a fool not to, and he certainly isn't that. I would welcome any options that would run better, handle better, be more efficient, or more reliable than what I currently have. If that motor becomes available Lee, let me know, and we'll do business again.
I hear ya Bob.
I don't believe one exist at this time. I'll keep you posted.![]()

I wonder if this is a 90 4-stroke as well. Just posting this from Allison's website as I thought it was cool.
Allison XB21 2+2, Merc 250 ProXS, 1.62 Sportmaster, Hydromotive Engineering X-OB 29
Excel 1751 Viper F4, Tohatsu 50 4-stroke, EZ-Trac trailer
FeelFree Lure 11.5 Kayak
Sure looks like a 90. Gets me to wondering what my xb02 would have done had I followed through with the Evinrude 115 plans.
Duane,
The Honda on the SS was a 60 hp I believe. Whatever it was Darris built that SS in the Honda color to display at the Honda dealer meeting that year. It is the best looking SS I've ever seen. Oh yea, it ran 60 mph!!!!!!

I like it myself. Might have to burn a lil rice in the future.
The Honda is a 90hp and it ran 62 mph. I saw the boat personally at the factory. Todd told me the speed numbers.
I hear ya Jay. I think this is a big step forward for 4-Strokes.![]()
I thought at first it was a 90. Then I remembered Darris saying it was being debuted (spelling?) Since the 90's have been around forever I got to thinking, (1st mistake) that it was a smaller engine. I saw the boat several times, not the engine.
