    1984 allison

    Hey guys,
I looking at at used allison bassboat. It is a 17ft 1984 with a 150HP johnson.
It comes with the trailer. What would be a good offer for this boat.
It is in fair shape for its age.
Any info about the performance or problems associated with this old allison
    would be appreciated.
I am on a limited buget.
    thanks

    Re: 1984 allison (swamptoad)

Do your homework on this hull. I think you may be talking about a XST ?

There's a lot of wood in those hulls. Ain't nuthin' wrong with wood until it gets wet. There are several of those models over here that are still in pristine shape and a few running some pretty serious HP. Check the transon area especially good, use a rubber hammer and tapp around in places, you'll be able to tell from a solid area to one that is soft from water absorption. If it's been left poutside form length of time, I'd suggest to have someone who is versed in checking out for water damage go with you to look it over. Typically is things are real cheap, there's a reason for that.

Too many times guys will buy a 'deal', only to find out later the hidden issues, and more often than not, will end up spending far more money fixing sumthin' up,,, when they coulda pocketed that money and spent it towards a rig that is more in line with what they looking for.

    Good luck, Russ

Re: 1984 allison (RB in NM)

    Thanks Russ
Since I posted this thread, I have learned that in 1984 they made a 17 & 18 Ft version. The 18 is rated for 150 HP, and the beam is wider. The 17 is 115 HP
Im a big guy and I want the wider beam boat so I will keep looking.
Can you tell me, what year did Allison switch to composite?

Not all Allison's were composite in 1987, I think the XB-2002 was the first, it was a few years before the XTB-21 was switched over.

I believe the xb-02 started composite in mid 91.

There's a 17' XST on scream and fly with power for 3200.........no pics of it yet, but the seller is top notch. He's in South Louisiana.

    Hey Russ,
The XB-2002 was the first to have a composite transom, 1987 or 88.

    Lee,,

I just realized something,,,,, in the past few years finding wood was a bad thing..The older I get, the less I tend to think in those terms........
