I was out tonight and started to another spot and as I got on plane the rpms went up but i was slowing down, like prop blowout. when engine started to rev hi I pulled the shift lever to netural, engine stalled. When the boat came to rest I tried to restart, the starter would engage but the engine would not turn. Trolled back to ramp . At home i pulled the drain plug on the lower unit and water came out, maybe a pint. Lots of silver shavings. So lower unit is done, would the lower unit keep the engine from turning or did it do more damage?
What's a ball park to have lower unit rebuilt?

yep is, it will keep the motor from turning over.
