    Hatfield-McCoy Trails in WVA

Anyone ever bombed around these trails on their ATV/Quad? I stumbled across this something about place the other day and was thinking this might be a cool place to visit with the wife in the late March-early April timeframe when we are in the "bad ice, no open water" season.

Also, what's this area normally like weather-wise at this time of year? Ideally we would like temps in the 60s, no snow, no bugs, not raining all the time.

    Thanks in advance.

    (EDIT : Yes I know it's Hatfield-McCoy )

I actually live near the trail and have grown up riding atv's all over what is now the Hatfield McCoy trail. Its a great place to ride and you get to see some great scenery. The weather for April is usually ranging from 60's to 70's, but with the weather we are having here now its really hard to tell. It has been in the 70's and 80's here for the past couple of weeks. I honestly don't think you guys could go wrong coming down and riding. Im sure you would have a great time.

YES - my wife and I took a 4 day trip down there couple years back..........

it was awesome! I had a blast - my wife, not so much...........but she'd just gotten her quad couple weeks before and didn't have a whole lot of time on one. Although she rode like a champ - her problem was her butt hurt.

We went in the fall - and it was very dry/dusty.......I mean REAL dusty.

We stayed in Gilbert - I think.......if I remember right and trailered to Man and rode to Logan and back one day.........and I think from Gilbert you can ride through town and hit the trails that are there. Forget what trail systems we rode - but we hit 2 of them.

    they have a website:

One of my best friends lives in Welch and a good friend that I met through him is a Hatfield...grandson of Cap Hatfield.

My good friends rides a lot through the area and talks about the awesome scenery. Be aware, though. Every now and then they stumped on a copperhead or rattler.

I was checking a Polaris RZR on You Tube the other night, (Just a bit of research dear, no I'm not thinking of buying one of them....) There are some pretty good videos of the McCoy Hatfield trails.

I did see that. There is one doing the Rock Climbing and Winching series down here. Up agains't Small Block powered Jeeps and it's keeping up with them. I had a Honda Oddysey buggy about 25 years ago, and these new things look like the goods. $21500 is a bit scarey for a toy though.

Just watch out for the "Wonderful Whites of West Virginia" or you might not make it back.

From what I can gather we'd get.....

    - Decent weather.
    - Great scenery.
    - Challenging trails (I've been looking at videos from the Rockhead system).
    - Poisonous snakes that we'll never see up here.
    - Potential for a little road rash.
    - Solid local folks who like ATVers.
    - A one-day drive (about 14 hours, 3 gas stops, 3 pee breaks (yeah right.....)).

I think I've just figured out what we're going to do at the end of March 2013.

    Thanks for the insights.....
