    triton tr 186 mercury 150 xr6 help

First im new. And i need some help. Im not trting to be ignorant and repetitive. I recently bought a 01 trition tr186 with 150 mercury xr6. second boat I have owned and really am fairly new to boats. i am turning 5000 rpms wide open and getting 52 mph with a trophy plus 24 p that came on it. I have exhausted myself trying to figure out what to do. have not tried anything bc i am young and dont want to waste money doing things that i shouldnt. Theory says along with local people that dont seem to be interested in helping to drop down to a 21 p prop to get to about 5600 rpms. or 22 p to get to 5400. Thinking about the tempest plus 21 or 22. All theory though Anyway i dont know where to start. jack plate? prop? Really didnt want to go crazy as i know its not going to be crazy fast. just want to get what i can and will be happy. Again just need some guidance.

Re: triton tr 186 mercury 150 xr6 help (rmgordon)

Seems as everything ive read that the tempest 23 is popular for this setup. but in theory will not get rpms up. and the hole shot sucks and is the reason that i am here. Would like to get speed up but want to get going quicker also

Other things may have an effect on rpm's, holeshot, top end speed. Boat set up for an example, how much weight you are putting in the boat, engine height. I had a 19fter with a hot 150 on it and it spun a 24P that was reworked by Boger props to 6K--------And had a hole shot that puts my 225 to shame.

I'm guessing the motor is low on the jackplate, and needs the 23 tempest plus. Boat should run 60ish.

23 tempest set at 5.75 above transom on a six inch plate should turn 5600 rpm. Top speed varies with load and conditions. Upper 50's to lower 60's

    Raise the motor 1/4 inch, I used to run a 25, and a 24 tempest on a 150 XR6

Do you have a shop close by that would loan you a prop to try? That would be the best way to find out what you need to buy.

Use the search button in the upper right hand corner. Search "TR186 Set up", click the archived button you'll get over 300 posts to lead you in the right direction. Read them over , compare them to your set up and then re-post in the "setups" section for specific help on your boat. My first thought is that your motor isn't 100% and welcome to the BBC.

Don't go crazy with the RPMs b/c I think the max is around 5800 on that motor.

Re: triton tr 186 mercury 150 xr6 help (rmgordon)

I had the same rig in a 2004 model. One thing to check immediately is the fuel lines and bulb and undercowl filter. Replace the lines and buld with the new ethanol resistant lines. Fuel delivery will have an impact on your rpm's. The best prop is the 23 Tempest Plus. My optimum engine height was 2.75" to 2.5" below the pad (propshaft). Decarb the engine and it should perform much better. It will be okay with the 24 Trophy but it likes the Tempest Plus better.

Are you heavy on the motor trim angle? Trim the motor up until it chine walks then lower it until it stops and check RPMs

Here is a link to the setup on the 186 I had....about 6 posts down. I ran 62-64gps consistently (hand held device back in 2004).
