Do you use cheap backing mono......

Wondering if the majority of guys use a cheap mono back when spooling their baitcasters with fluoro or more expensive lines. Yes/No? If yes how much backing?

Re: Do you use cheap backing mono...... (mowigglewart)

I use power Pro braid and spool the whole reel with it. That way I know I will not have to worry about not having enough line. Plus I'll put it on another spool sometimes the next year so it goes on backwards.

I never did understand the whole backing trick. I find there is not that big a difference in the price to bother. Plus why bother having all this high end rods, reels, lures and hold them together with the cheapest line you can find????

Yes, about half of a spool. Got a big roll of BPS extreme.

I use 17lb BPS moss green mono and fill it about 1/3 to 1/2 and then tie on fluro.
Easy to see when you're getting close with the green line.

Re: Do you use cheap backing mono...... (cranks)

I'm a cheap azz, so I use cheap mono for backing, generally about half of spool capacity. It's only there to take up space anyhow.I join it with an alberto knot to my main line. I've never had a situation in which I got down to my backing. There are valid arguments for not using backing, it comes down to personal preference.

Re: Do you use cheap backing mono...... (mowigglewart)

Always use backing. I know about how much line I need on each reel for the intended purpose of the reel. I use a lot less line on my flipping/pitching set up and a lot more on my deep diving cranks. I bought one of those cheap line counters a couple of years ago and it has served me well. Most of my backing is 15# Big Game that I use for topwater plugs.

Sometimes if you spool up with braid only the braid will slip on the spool making you think something is wrong with your reel.

Re: Do you use cheap backing mono...... (Jav400SDC)

    Why wouldnt you use backing?

Do you really use the last 50 to 80 yards of line on a spool, its pointless to spool up a full spool of fluoro when you are only going to use 1/2 of it when its on there anyway.

I guess my 200 dollar reels arent as good 1/2 full of Seaguar as the next guys 200 dollar reel full of it?

    No logic there at all.

I have a LOT of 15/17# Big Game so I spool about 30-40 ft of it on before I add the Izor Platinum or Samurai braid.

Re: Do you use cheap backing mono...... (mowigglewart)

I figured out how to save $$$ many years ago, in my trout/fly fishing days.
The word "Backing" did not hit the bass fishing world until about 20 or so years ago. I have been doing it for over 30 years now.
It is smart unless chasing much bigger prey.

Re: Do you use cheap backing mono...... (Jav400SDC)

I use backing on every reel I own. Doesn't matter if it's a $30.00 or $300.00 reel. I use cheap #10lb test as backing, as that seems the smaller line is a bit "tighter" on the reel, if that makes sense.
I can fill 3 reels from a filler spool of #50lb braid. First time I used braid only on a reel it slipped on the spool. I'll do the same exact thing with floro. Seen quite a few of the pros do the same thing. I've yet to have a largemouth spool a reel!! Double uni knot works GREAT for attaching both braid and floro to backing.

Years ago the ABU reels had these plastic things that looked like little barrels that snapped or screwed together around the spool shaft itself to eliminate having to use so much line. I wonder why something like that isn't invented for many of today's reels? Sure looks like someone that could make them sure could sell a ton of them to save everyone on line seeing how expensive some of it is. I would think on average 50 yards would be plenty of line to cast with instead of having a 100 or more yards per reel that goes to waste unless it's braid where you can spool it on another reel and reuse it. Just something else to think about.

Re: Do you use cheap backing mono...... (Crappieman)

I use Berkley Big Game 10lb as backing on mine. 1/4lb spool at walmart is about 7$ so it is a lot cheaper. I use about 60 yards of main line and the rest of the spool is backing.

Re: Do you use cheap backing mono...... (Crappieman)

wanna save ALOT of $$ on line all year? Spool about 25% backing....fill up with braid...then tie a flouro or flouro-coated leader of a few ft. That braid will last you many years unless you really jack it up thru backlashes, etc. When the leader gives up the ghost..retie.

I join the 2 with an improved Albright knot...but pick your poison.
