why i dislike dealing with selling anything

Put my charger up for sale 2 weeks ago. Have had several bites on it. Had a guy come look at it, and he really liked it. Wanted me to meet him at the lake a couple days later to drive it, and brought his boat because we were talking about a possible trade plus cash on his end. I really liked his, spent quite a bit of time in it, as he did mine. He said he wanted it, and ask if we could meet the next day to transfer the titles. Make contact with him the next day and he backs out. No big deal, have another person wanting to look at it. The are coming from over an hour away. I meet them at the lake, back it down. Boat starts and runs like a top. He drives it a lot. Gets it up on plane several times and actually used quite a bit of fuel, which i did not care for a potential buyer to do so. He was super impressed with the motor, and how well it planed out and how good the ride of the charger had in descent chop. take it back to the ramp, load it up. He shakes my hand says he appreciates it and leaves. Did not even begin to try and negotiate the price. Not as much as even bring up the price to me. Not sure if he just wanted a joy ride or what . He talked price with me on the phone before he came and it was in his range. I know thats part of selling, and have about 4 others in line to look this coming week. Hopefully it sells

Well it could be better and worse.

I sold my little Ranger to a guy that saw it on these boards. I gave them a DEAL (1200 bucks for an 86 320v with a running Johnson 110). They came from Michigan to get it. I even had a new tire put on an sent an extra hub with them in case they had issues on the way home. We signed the title while they were here and got it notarized. I got one email from them saying they made it and the boats was great for the price.

Now I am still getting Tax bills for it because they either did not title it in Michigan or did not need to. The email I have them him bounces back now and I don't have the phone number anymore.

I am going to the NC DMV the week and declare it as junk so they will stop sending me tax bills and if it bites them in the azz so be it.

Easy solution...charge everyone $100 for a test drive. If they buy the boat, give it back. If they leave, you got gas money.

How come you didn't bring the sandwiches for the sea trial?

All sea trials and surveys are conducted after the price is agreed upon, never before. The sea trial/survey is a CONTINGENCY of the sale; the price must be negotiated first.

Otherwise, when conducting a sea trial without a negotiated price requires that you provide the sandwiches (ha).

Re: why i dislike dealing with selling anything (SOONER*REDNECK)

That kind of goes with the territory when buying or selling as sometimes sellers back out or will pull a real chicken s_ _t deal on a buyer as well. I don't buy boats for a living but do buy a certain commodity for further processing in a very competitive business and plenty of inconsiderate, dishonest and unethical things can happen. I've been around so long I can usually spot these situations well in advance from past experience and recognize those kind of individuals that have those tendencies and don't bother with them.

However you are selling something in an over supplied market, dealing with inexperienced buyers, buyers making a major cash investment on an item they don't really have to have and possibly a little short of surplus cash to begin with. There is also a huge percentage of the population that can't make a decision to save their life and are comfortable in the looking process but not pulling the trigger either to buy or sell.

I would say the first guy who backed out probably with help from the wife figured out he couldn't afford your boat and decided to keep his own instead. The second guy is probably shopping and looking at several used boats but wants to compare the ride on various boats and getting as many free demos as he can before he makes up his mind. You probably won't hear back from him but you did good in keeping your cool. Some people have a difficult time making a decision especially on the spot at a boat ramp there is always the chance he could call back when he figures out your boat was great and hopes it's still available so never lose the opportunity for future business with a confrontation as he is still a potential buyer.

Also keeps the tire kickers and joyriders to a minimum.

If someone told me it will cost $100 to test drive anything I would say thanks for your time and call the next one on my list. Test drives are part of the process of selling. You wouldn't buy a car with a test drive.

I usually just try to rule out the tire kickers upfront. I am in sales for a living so I have gotten somewhat good at doing this

If you suspect they are just wasting your time, call them on it. Ask to see some money or ask them what they are thinking on the price BEFORE you go to the lake. If they start to balk then no lake test. If you start negotiating or you get a feeling they are a buyer, take them out in it.

That is a great idea in theory however in as many used bass Boats as there are for sale right now probably not a good idea in reality. If I had an individual say that to me over the phone I wouldn't even drive to look at the boat sitting on the trailer figuring with a chippy attitude like that he'd be hard to deal with anyway.

Now of course after looking at it on the trailer unless I was really interested in it I wouldn't waste my time or his on a test ride just to go for a boat ride.

I've made offers on several boats in the past at a fair price I was comfortable with and been on the receiving end of some real smart remarks about how much more the boat was worth and what it cost new, better buy it before it gets away etc. I won't tell you how many phone calls I've had a few weeks later asking me if I would still give that for the boat as they couldn't get a better offer. Now as long as the sun comes up tomorrow there will always be used boats for sale and no one has the last one for sale. I love telling those kind of sellers no even if I hadn't bought one yet.

The true value of a used boat is what a qualified buyer(one with cash or a certified check) will give. The last one I bought guy was saying well there is another party interested in it that will give more but can't get here till next week to look at it. I said OK as I have another boat spotted and I'll just buy it if you want to wait or I'll be there Friday with a certified bank check for the amount I offered. There was a long hesitation followed up by a wellllllllll.....I guess we'll see you on Friday. I hooked up the boat and handed him the check and the fellow said just what in the hell do you do for a living? ...we had a good laugh and said I wondered why I didn't have a chance.

I had a guy show up with rods, tackle box and a cooler to test drive my Ranger when I sold it. He had no intention of buying a boat

No, no, no. I'm not settling on a price unless I look at it and that includes a sea trial or mechanic inspection if I go that route. If you don't concur with that, then I won't be looking at your boat.

I sold my boat about an hour ago. The guy who bought it has been asking me about it for 2 seasons so he had first dibs. I know I could of haggled some more cash out of another buyer but I dont have the patience or time to do what the OP is doing. My buisness is verbally booked into May already. Plus Im negotiating the next boat already so in order for a spot on that one I needed my boat to be sold first.

Way to keep doing business and moving on. Too many good deals are missed trying to get a few extra bucks to soothe one's ego. Plus it's way easier to negotiate on another boat when you already got your old one sold. If you sold your last one a grand too cheap just by your next one two grand too cheap it's all about the replacement cost differential not what you sold the old one for.....

You are a good seller and a good businessman
