    Oil leakage from VRO pump(?)

    Make: Johnson
    Model: J200VXSS"S"
    Serial: G04806863
    Year: 2000

In the following picture, is oil supposed to seep from this area? I noticed a drop of oil in the purple area. I looked at my factory service manual, and the cross section picture of the VRO pump shows an air gap around the red-encircled piece. There was some black gasket material (?) that I peeled off to get a better look. Is it normal for oil to be leaking from that area?

    Thanks in advance (again)!

Your pump is repairable and you only need the oil module part of it. See your dealer.

Do you have an idea of expected cost? This motor is becoming a financial headache!

OK, I did some digging on BRP's site... I come up with part number:
    0438955 for $66

Is this the ONLY part I should need? Are the seal and o-ring reusable?

    Thanks!

    Re: (jgwufgator)

    More thoughts:

Could the little, metal piston within that chamber (red circle) be leaking oil into that void? Is oil supposed to be in that chamber at all? If not, that would explain why there are air gaps in the pictures. If no oil is supposed to be up there, that means it could be leaking around the piston OR from up through the area behind the circuit board.

    Logical?

(I am basing my thoughts on the VRO article from continuos wave.)

Please someone help. :) I don't want to buy a whole new pump if I don't need to.

OK, I pulled the unit off, cleaned it up, lined up the sealing gasket, pulled out the metal piston, cleaned up the O-ring, applied a slight amount of oil to both gaskets, reassembled and tightened the snot out of the screws. That may have fixed it. I ran for about five minutes, and it no longer appears to be leaking.

I guess I'll know for sure next weekend.

Re: Oil leakage from VRO pump(?) (jgwufgator)

There is a tiny piston inside the oil chamber that connects to a rod, which in turn goes into the electronics module, not to be confused with the oil pump piston. It is sealed by an oring. Each time the oil pump "fires", the small piston and rod move to "tell" the electronics that an oil pressure pulse happened. The electronics compare the pulses with the motor rpm and sets an alarm sequence if they are out of the programmed range.

That small oring is what allowed oil to get into your electronics and out the tiny hole. Removing and replacing the module probably reseated the oring.

Re: Oil leakage from VRO pump(?) (SEAHORSE)

    When you say:
    <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by SEAHORSE &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">There is a tiny piston inside the oil chamber that connects to a rod...</TD></TR></TABLE>

When I pulled the no-oil unit off, the no-oil rod wasn't even in straight. I pulled it (gently) and it came right out. Is it supposed to be connected to something? When I reassemble it, should any gasket sealing material be used?

I am debating on whether to trust it (free), buy a new no-oil module(~$65), or buy a whole new pump(~$280). I spoke with three dealers, and they all said to replace the pump. I spoke to BRP (twice!) and they said to replace the pump. BRP's reasoning was that if I repair the pump and it fails, I am SOL. If I buy a new pump and it fails, then BRP will fix me up. Also, they all said that a torn diaphragm would cause this. I am not believing that. They also said that repair parts were going to be discontinued, because nobody rebuilds them anymore.

    Choices choices.
