    Has anyone ever...

Has anyone ever built an RC airplane from scratch? I have a weird work schedule and I don't get to fish much right now so I am looking for a hobby and I think this would be pretty cool. I have the plans to make my first starter plane, but I have some questions about motor, controls, etc. and I was wondering if anyone here could possibly help me out. Thanks in advance!

See if there is a club near you. You'd probably get a lot of help from them and maybe make a friend or two.

Good suggestion. My son flies, and his 1st plane was a foam trainer. They're resilient, easy to repair, and easy to fly for a beginner. And trust me ..... you'll need something that is EASY TO REPAIR.

I would also strongly suggest that you go electric instead of gas. Less expense, fly almost as well, and easier to maintain in the long run.

Start making tackle instead..... the first time you crash that plane you will cry

Learn how to pour lead, pour plastics, wrap rods, paint baits, etc. etc. etc. You will then be able to use what you make

I was thinking of making this foam trainer http://www.ozonefoam.com/stcbg.pdf but it's not real specific about what type of engine or controls to use. Everything I can find says it's a great plane, but I can't find any info on the equipment. As to the suggestion to make tackle, I started doing that about 5 years ago making all my shaky heads and jigs, but like I said I don't get to fish much because of my schedule and where I am living right now so I am caught up on my tackle, but can't take advantage right now unfortunately

I did when I was younger and after that much work I was afraid to fly it. I sold it and never flew it.

I can understand that, which is why I am starting with this easy one. But as much as I crash and burn in all aspects, whats a foam plane?

Buddy at work flies RC Helicopters. There is a program out for your computer or laptop that will let you plug your controller into your computer and fly a virtual Helicopter for practice. He said that helped him out in the beginning.

I have the simulator and it really helps, it`s probably saved me thousands of dollars in parts.

ok what do you need help with? i'v flown nitro fueled r/c airplanes since the late 1980's & still enjoy them to this day. its a wonderful hobby but not a cheap hobby especially @ 1st. what is the plane your going to scratch build? is it a trainer i hope? dont build a scale p-51 mustang and expect to learn on that, aint gonna happen. a .40 sized high wing trainer will be your best bet to learn the ropes. i also highly suggest a good r/c flight simulator, your going to need to get use't to the ailerons/rudder being opposite when the plane is coming at you, also landings are a handful for the newb, believe me iv totaled a few in my early days on final approach please don't hesitate asking me any questions on planes, i love them & have enjoyed flying them for many years. I still get a kick out of little boys who get to watch us fly, you can see there fascination with them.

Here is the plane I want to start with http://www.ozonefoam.com/stcbg.pdf

It is supposed to be a very easy plane to fly. There are videos all over youtube of the STC which is this plane. It just doesn't tell me in the plans what exact motor, batteries, servos, gear etc. to use on it.

ok, i just went over the build plans, looks like they are using 3channels ie throttle, elevator, rudder,mini-servo's for the controls, & they are using an electric motor to fly it, which on this plane id stay with electric. the plane you are looking at building is considered a park flier, they usually fly decent but can be squirrly. It looks like a straight forward build & any decent hobby shop will have what you need. if you can print off this build you can take this with you to the hobby shop to get all the parts to make it fly, it does tell what it requires for the motor/batt/esc also.

    Re: Has anyone ever... (bassman34)

If you want to build continue on. If you want to fly here's a good place with some fairly decent ready to fly electrics. http://www.hobby-lobby.com/rtf...g.htm I built, flew, crashed, repaired, and sold my first trainer. Bought an electric with a couple of extra battery packs and flew as much and often as i wanted with a car charger adapter. As suggested find a flying club close by. Most all that are in it are more than happy to assist beginners.
