Watching the classic this past weekend I noticed several guys had these things on the end of their rod handles, they were bright colored, looked like some sort of float system.
Are they floats, or just color coding, or what the heck are they?

They are designed to protect your nuts from a metal gimbal fitting on the butt of off shore rods. I have no idea why they are used by Bass anglers, apart from maybe a very successful marketing ploy. Three BBC posts about them with guys wanting to know where to buy them.
Next year, KVD will be rolling Trojan glow in the dark condoms onto his rod butts to boost sales.
I am sure if KVD does, sales will skyrocket.

They do look bulky, and I'm not sure they would work well (grabbing clothes and such) but I have had rod butt sized bruises on my ribs the day after fishing. I'm sure it was because of the way I was fishing, rod I was using, etc... because it doesn't happen often but there are some that would benefit from a sleeker design.

I am not sure about them either, the only appeal is not losing a rod. On my home lake when they fall over the edge they are gone as it's deep in spots.
I agree that they look like they would grab your clothes and hang up.
Looks like an Adam & Eve product to me.
They ought to be called "rod butt plugs" cause that's what they look like.
