    Homemade Rod Protectors (Picture Heavy)

I started this process because I had a bunch of this material left over from a job that we did. It was through many trail and errors that I finally have made some that I approve of. As you can see in the last picture I played around with idea of dipping the ends where the rods goes in with some plastic dip, and it turned out awesome.

Here is what I started with.

    I am melting the tip.

I cut some heat shrink tubing to protect the melted ends.

Here are some of my finished products.

Look great! How did you get the material to flare out while you put the rubberized coating?

Re: Homemade Rod Protectors (Alan S)

After I cut the end square and melted the ends, I folded the sleeveing to the inside (About 2") That will naturally flare the material at the opening. But I was still not satisfied with the result that I was getting. Then I put the flame of my torch down the middle of the sleeve for just a second and get it hot, while it was still soft and pliable, I inserted a piece of 1" diameter wood into the opening and formed the flare that I was wanting.<table width="90%" cellspacing=0 cellpadding=0 align=center><tr><td>Quote, originally posted by Alan S &raquo;</td></tr><tr><td class="quote">Look great! Where can you order this stuff? Someone mentioned Tech Flex, but I can't seem to order direct, and their online distributors end up being higher than just buying these off the shelf already made up.

    Try this... http://www.mcmaster.com/#catalog/118/817/=gdznlo

There is a large variety of color and material thickness available, the one that I used was the heavy duty material.
