Need advice about a new roof

My house that I just bought is past due for a new roof and this summer it will be getting replaced. My question is should I go with shingles or metal. I've heard metal lasts longer and the look of it really doesn't bother me. I kinda like how it looks. How long will a shingle roof vs. a metal roof last? Anybody have a brown metal roof, any drawbacks? (fading,ect). And how do the two compare in prices. My home is 1800 square foot with a 2 car garage. Any advice is much appreciated. metal more shingles less. go with what you can afford... metal last longer but cost much more.. also you need to take into consideration the style of you house and make sure metal will not look crappy.. Good luck...

metal roofing prices have came down alot in the last several years although still more exspensive than shingles in our market its usually only about 35% more. 29 guauge is fine for most residential applications. Here our customers usually see anywhere from 35-65 dollars a month decrease in summer electricity bills. most major suppliers use prime coil to make the panels, thats what you want any sub prime metals with cheap coating will fade very fast. i would look for united or imperial coil (coil is what the panels are made from)as i have had good success with those two brands (one has valspar coating but cant remember). they will all fade to some degree , united offers a 40-10 warranty wich states that it wont fade more than 10% over 40 years. the warranties are prorated of course.
more than likely a steel roof will outlast its owner, however i recommend to our customers to anticipate having the screws replaced at around 20 years , just to be safe.
the biggest downside is MAKE SURE YOU LIKE THE COLOR before you put it up, make sure you will be able to live with it forever. and you cannot CANNOT get on it when it is wet or even damp you WILL look like humpty dumpty if you try.

i got a dark Green roof , been on for 3 years no fading,, insurance co. should give you a break .. i would go with the metal

the price on shingles will follow fuel prices, when we did our metal roof it was only 1800 dollars more than a shingled roof....

the 35% cost difference is on a barn style panel, if you want a real metal roof, use a hidden panel fastener roof. my opinion is an exposed screw roof is worthless on a house. i would go with shingles. almost all are lifetime warranty now. if you want to spend a little extra go with a stormmaster shingle, they are hail resistant. shingles will be about half of a good metal roof if the metal roof is wuoted with proper installation.

if you have a HOA or live in town make sure you can do it. i wanted to but my HOA wouldnt allow it.

From my understanding it is the "look". Here in New England especially north, metal roofs are good because the snow melts faster than on an asphalt roof. I think the copper color metal roofs are awesome, but that's my opinion. They also tell you to make sure your attic is well insulated so when it rains hard, you don't hear it hitting the roof all day. Noise from the rain is a factor.
