I'm looking for a used Suburban with a 3:63 rear end......all I can seem to find are the 3:09's. Anybody own one? If so how do they tow up big hills etc. Thanks!!
My bet would be that the gears are 3:08 gears. I don't have a Surburban, but I do have a GMC Sierra 4x4 with the 3:08 gears and a 6 speed auto. I was somehwhat concerned when I bought it, but it does fine pulling up hills. It will shift more often, but then that's what it's supposed to do. When in really hilly terrain, I use the tow/haul switch.

Of course I talk to myself...sometimes I need expert advice.
im thinkng youre looking for 3.73, not 3.63
fairly common nowadays
I've found the suburban I want, at a good price...However it has the 3:08 gears. I know it is a 6 speed transmission, but I'm worried it's going to feel lethargic pulling the boat. I've been told I can switch the front and rear differentials for about 2k.....Just hate to do that on a truck with less than 10k miles on it![]()
Ask if they have a demo you can try to pull your boat with for a quick trip...It will be fine with those gears
Standard should be a 3.73:1 if it has the 5.3L Engine. With a 4.10:1 as an option.

I have a 2007 Suburban that I pull my Basscat with. No issues pulling, however I did have a new trans put in it 1 year after I purchased it. It was one year old when I got it, so I cannot say that pulling my boat caused it to fail, but since having it replaced, I have not had any issues with it.
I have owned a Tahoe, Yukon, or Suburban since 1995 and love them.

Gear sets from GM have changed since they went to "THEIR" 6-speed tranny.
Goto GM web site and look up the towing caps. for the gear sets you are looking at.

What's the Gear code??

I know on the Tahoe all you can get is 3:42 with the tow package. Standard is the 3:08 now.

I had a Chevy Dealer run the vin and it shows the 3:08 ratio. On GM's website it shows the 3:08 rated to tow 5k and the 3:42 rated for 8,100!!! Big diffrence seems like. Really wanted this truck, but just seems like it will not be a strong tow vechicle.....
My wifes Suburban has a GU6 - 3.42 gears.
It does great towing my Z21.
It will be for sale soon if you are interested. 2009 Black, 5.3 V8, 4x4, LT, Bose, Rear camera, adjustable pedals, locking diff, towing package.
I think she has about 20,000 miles.
Thanks for all the help...I had several I'ms including BassinBrad, who said I would be fine with the 3:08 so I pulled the trigger and bought a 11 Z-71 Sububurban. I'll let you know how she pulls soon as I get a chance to go fishing!!!

</td></tr></table>no doubt! my understanding is the lower gears in the 6 speed make up for the higher gearing for highway speeds and better mpg.

Well, Im sure Sean will post pictures soon. I went with him to pick it up, drove 600 miles to Jackson, Mississppi. Wow, what a truck, rides like a big cloud. Suburban is the way to go for long trips thats for sure. I want one myself now.
Ok finally snapped a photo! Going to limo out the windows, debating on an exhaust package.
One more question...the build sheet shows a z82 HD trailering equipment package, which is supposed to include the HD cooling system and transmission cooler...but I do not see those options listed?
The true test will be hooking up the I Class and seeing how she pulls....So far rides like a dream, and has plenty of power without the boat.![]()
Good looking truck. maybe add nothing! it looks good factory!
