was wondering what would happen if you bought a boat and found out later that there was still a lien on it?would you lose the boat or is there a way to get around it.

Possible you could have to give it up to the lender if the loan was in default...and possible you could have to give it up to the owners name on the title if they report it as stolen. Additionally, how would you ever register a boat without a title / registration in tour name???

    Re: boat title (timberland)

    He's in Tenn
There is no boat titles here
Tenn uses the boat registration to prove ownership

There is a lien on his boat and who ever holds it can call the note in

You can probably make the previous owner give you your money back as it was illegal for him to sell the boat while the lien was in place. Doing so is fraud unless you are aware and proper arrangements have been made with the lien holder

    Nope
    Just the registration card

There is way to file a legal lien

Ok, possible you could have to give it up to the owners name on the "registration" if they report it as stolen. Either way, if your thinking of buying without it knowingly being "signed off" by a lender your foolish. Don't do it. If you did already...."try" to get your money back.

    Re: boat title (timberland)

I love Tennessee but sometimes its messed up

There is no boat title, they use the registration card to prove owners ship
There is no way to know if there is a lien on the boat if the previous owner doesn't tell you

I have owned a lot of boats but other than one I bought from a guy at work, I have always bought from a dealer. They handle the paperwork. BTW if you are borrowing money to buy it, the bank or credit union will be able to check that for you. They have an interest in making sure you have a clean title
