    Anyone Have A Kiln?

My daughter enjoys working in ceramics and has taken multiple classes at the local JC. She is pretty good at it and makes some very nice stuff. Anyway and neighbor down the street had a kiln in their garage and gave it to her.

Electric 240 volt, about 5 feet around and 4 feet tall. It's used and needs what are I hope are just a some screws replaced in the banding and hinges.

She's checked with the JC instructor, reviewing info on the net and I guess a local ceramics store has a fellow thats a kiln expert. Not 100% sure were it will go and at this point we don't have 240, but she has the funds for the required wiring as long as it's not excessive.

So anyone have one, any advice for a new Kiln owner? (That being me the home owner)

I wonder if it would not be cheaper to convert the heater in the kiln to 120...I would imagine it just takes longer to dry

It would cost more to operate. 240 volts is not a major task the part that becomes the expense is accessibility to the area you want it in.

Had one in my garage about 25 years ago for the wife. I thought the electric meter was going to brake from the dials spinning so fast. Be ready for a spike in your electris bill

Be careful. My college sweetheart, Fawn Leibowitz, died in a kiln explosion.

The cost of getting the 240 to your garage is gonna depend on how big the service comimg into your house(100amp or 200amp) and how far the source(breaker box) is from the garage.Good luck

I can't imagine a home nowadays with out 240! What runs the AC and cooking range and oven?

Re: Anyone Have A Kiln? (Garfish)

We do have 220 or 240.. what ever is required for AC, Oven and spa. What I meant is we don't have any availible circuit where we could just plug it in at this time.

for what those kiln's heat to (1500-2000 degrees) I don't think you'd want to run it on 110 volt ..

It would not be cheaper at 120V because I'm sure your standard 120V 20A receptacle circuit won't carry the load. Post the nameplate data...wattage or KV.

First thing- do not put it in a house. The fumes coming from the glaze will run you out of the house. Also, before buying either fire it up to see all the elements heat up or use an ohm meter to check them. Good luck!

It feels so good to be back here at the Dexter Lake Club. We'd like to do a tune entitled: Shama Lama Ding Dong.

I'll ask my wife, she has one in our spare room. I always tell her that thing is gonna be the death of us. Looks like a dang volcano about to erupt. I really dont like the idea of something thats 2000 degrees INSIDE of our house.
