My tech. called me today and said he tore down my motor and says that my crank is magnetized? I am not sure how this may have happened, but he also says that #1 cyl. on the bottom exh. end is worn or battered. Anyone ran into this issue in the past?

I am not sure how to respond to this post........![]()
Possibly needs to be magnafluxed to check for cracks?![]()

because of the powerful flywheel magnets and the alternator making lots of "juice", it's normal for the steel parts to get some magnatism. That's been going on for lots of years.
for some of you trained by the "old timers" you always heard, do not use a magnet near a bearing or to pick up loose needle bearings. Well, in an outboard, they already are magnetic.
the worn and battered piston probably ran lean and that caused detonation, especially if the damaged area is near the exhaust port.

Thanks Sea Horse and everyone for the response. I was mistaken, it was the intake side that was damaged on the piston. My mechanic is an OMC dealer and he says he has never seen this kind of problem in the past. He says he has built hundreds of motors and never saw a mag pull like this on all bearings on this outboard. Is it a good idea to de mag everything and replace bad componets and assemble?
Rusty,
If you need more info to give good advise, please ask and I will try to answer any questions you may have. Your opinion is valued here.

Had a cross flow V-4 flow where the crankshaft was magnatized so bad tha it would kill packs in about 45 min -1 hour. It was on a survey boat that used generators and the engine picked up the current. Took a long time for us and OMC to figure out the issue. We had the crankshaft demagnatized. The engine is now still inservice. OMC found somebody local to do the degousing.
Thanks Rudetech1 ! This motor is am a 20' Astro bass boat, I have had this boat from last August and have had nothing on this rig except tackle, rods, beer and a fishing buddy or two.![]()
Good to hear that the rig you work on is still in service. Thanks for taking the time on this issue.![]()
