Etec 225 or 250 buying reasons?

I am thinking about an Etec for my next boat and was wondering what your thoughts are on the the 225 or the 250? There wasn't much info on here about the motors. I have seen all of there marketing videos but I am looking for real world info ie; fuel economy, oil consumption, performance numbers and recommended props and what the RPM range is?

    Any info is appreciated.

What kind of boat are you getting it for?

For a bass boat, the 225 H.O. is the way to go. The 250 is essentially the same motor as the 225 H.O., but has a different lower unit which results in a loss of speed.

If you are going to be on a larger, heavier boat, the 250 may be the way for you to go.

As for mileage, I don't know exacts. I know my 225 H.O. gets very good mileage both on fuel and oil.

Recommended operating rpms is 5800. They'll spin to 6200+ before you hit the limiter but you really aren't gaining anything there. The fuel savings drops off after 5800.

    On a 201 Stratos, the 250 is 3-4 mph slower than a 225 H.O.

    Hope that helps.

All is good from this end. I love this motor! Thankfully, I haven't had one squawk yet. I usually fish resorvoirs from 10-20K surface acres and fuel up w/ 6-10 gals. of fuel for each outing. I don't know how much it consumes, but it I find it very fuel efficient. Once the motor goes out of double oil it does sip it. Meanwhile, you'll go through about 3 gallons pretty quick.

Peformance is outstanding on my Cobra. I have pushed it 76 mph once and that was before the "tourney load" took effect. I don't feel you can go wrong w/ either the 250 or 225HO. I bought it hoping for improved reliability and I think I got it.

You said it double oils initially, but if it is three years no maintenance how does this get changed? Let me know thanks.

After about 10 hrs running time, the computer cut the double oiling back.. after that it does just sip it, luckly because X100 isn't cheap..

    Skitrman,

The Etec is a 2 stroke motor so there is no oil change. What the motor does is burns the oil with the gas.

One of the reason I don't like 4 stroke outboards are because I hate changing oil. I hate doing it on my vehicles, and my deep fryer so since I don't have to with a 2 stroke motor, I went with 2 strokes on my boats.

Re: Etec 225 or 250 buying reasons? (Dae)

Sorry Dae, The DI's and the ETECs are direct injected meaning the oil is directly injected into the engine NOT the fuel, with only a little making it to the gas to keep the injectors clean. Any residual oil is then sent back to the tank from the crankcase. That is why I run the XD-100 on my DI, because it uses so little oil, The ETEC is even better when programmed for the XD-100. The DI's aren't programmed. The computer automatically goes to single oil after x amount of hours over 2000 rpms. Hope this helps Skitrman! I love my DI, but if I could afford it I would have a new 225 HO ETEC on my rig!!!

buy the bad boy, you will not regret it. I have had my ETEC 225HO since March of 2005 and it has been flawless. It gets great fuel mileage and sips the oil, heck at first I wondered if it was even using oil. And you have to love the no break in and 3 years no maintenance.

Question: I have a E-tec 250 on a Z-21. What is the difference in the lower units between a 225 and a 250? Is the 250 lower unit just bigger in size? Is it more durable? Thanks

There is no difference between the Magnum gearcase that came with your 250 and the Magnum gearcase that comes on a 'standard' 225. The 225 H.O. has a Lightning lower unit that is good for 3-4 mph on most bass boats. It is a slimmer design that cuts through the water better.

Here are the best pics I could find of each one. The Lightning is on a DI motor, but it's the same design.

    Mike,

You're correct that the oil is strategically injected to the places where needed but the oil is still burned off and only the oil that's not burned is returned to the tank on the DIs. If the oil never burned off we would be doing oil changes like they do on 4 strokes.

So they have it built in to a computer program? Interesting. As for the no breakin did you guys put it in the water and hammer down right out of the box? I like the idea of it. How much oil are you guys talking when referring to sipping oil? I currently burn approximately 1 gallon per 50 gals of fuel on my Yammie. Are you guys burning less than that? That would be a good thing. Thanks for all the input it is helpful.

What boat are you running your HO on? What kind of speed are you getting? What prop are you running, pitch and brand? Thanks for the info.

Re: Etec 225 or 250 buying reasons? (Skitrman)

It is all computer controlled. There is no owner initiated breakin. I can't tell you an exact, but I can tell you it is a little better than that.

Both 225 H.O. E-TEC's I have had ('05 and '06) have run 80 mph on their initial run. Back it in the water and hammer down.

My '05 was on a Stratos 200 Pro XL and my '06 is on a Blazer 202 Pro-V. I'm spinning a 29 TXP and a 30 TXP on my Blazer at 1" below the pad to upper 70's with a full load and 80+ by myself. In the late winter/early spring I was running 80 with a full load.

I love my 250 E-Tec. It's very quiet and smooth as well as economical. You most likely will average 1 gallon of XD100 per 100 gallons of fuel. Hope this helps.

I don't know my per gallon ratio...but I am averaging 1 gallon of XD100 per 20hrs of operation on the engine....
