Oil leaking out of the airbox

    Hi guys,

Have posted here before. 1998 175 Evinrude Ficht Model # 175FSXEC serial # 4439333 with pinned heads, software upgrade 5001212 with 167 hours.

When I shut the motor off in the downward position there is a series of oil that drips down from the motor and drains into the water. Is it normal for this to happen? My dealer said I should leave the motor in the downward position for a little while before lifting it up. He said that gives the oil time to drain back into the crankcase.

Also, The motor was only turning up to 4800 rpms. I reading some of the posts hear I was under the impression the motor would run better at around 5200 to 55oo rpms. So I changed the prop from a 15 x 17 to a 15 x 15. Hope this makes the motor last longer.

    Thanks for the imput Chris

Check to see that the plastic "T" that goes from the oil pump to the fuel line is not cracked. Also check that the return line from the airbox is attached and not clogged.

In our area boats need to idle sometime before getting to there slip. This idle period will build up oil. Once the engine is tilted up the oil drips into the airbox. Once its starts to leak out, its time to take the air box off and clean it with a rag. If you have the chance to open it up within a few mins. before shutting it down you will cut the cleaning down by 3/4. What size boat are you running?? It must be large if you need a 15" to get 0ver 5,000

We use a blotter material to catch the oil residue that drips into the pan. Cut it to size, put it under the throttle shafts and under the hoses. It will soak up the oil, throw it away and replace it when it is full.

I just use a pair of old underwear as a blotter under my motor. I guess it would be more appropriate to call it a "diaper".
