    johnson rebuild help

im ordering the parts for the rebuild today for my johnson 140
does anyone have any tech tips that may help with the rebuild
    DO's and Dont's????

i ordered piston, rings, connect rod brgs, wrist pin brgs, thermostats, relief valves, gaskets.

does the rings inside an outboard have the dot similar to auto engines for locating top side, or does it?

do i need to use any oil on the cylinde walls for initial cranking, during rebuild, etc.

i really dont want to do this again in a few months.
cylinder walls look excellent, but ive been advised to use a honing (spelling?) tool slightly on th walls. any comments good or bad for this???

    i forgot the tech info

You really need a service manual before attempting a rebuild. Not only does it show and explain how to do the different procedures, it tells what special tools are needed, the clearance specifications, and the torque specs.

"Wingin' it" doesn't work most of the time.

That brings up another question. Do you think any one service manual is better than the other as far as who it's put out by?

i am not a tech and dont pretend to be but i am poor and try to fix my own junk

order one specifically for YOUR engine if you buy the one book covers all you will spend countless hours reading how to fix other models and when you look at pictures some thing will look different to you and confusion sets in

i am sure the pros will advise to buy a factory service manual for YOUR model for some other technical reason , but thats why I recommend one
