    Reel posture

Is it weird that I use LH reels for baitcasters? I have both LH and RH, but I feel the LH ones are more natural. I am right handed. I'm sure if I am just weird but I feel they allow me the smoothest reel as I don't have to switch hands after the lure hits the water.

What brought this up was my mother in law wanted to buy me a new reel for xmas and I had to stress to her it was a LH reel, she argued with me because I am right handed.

    Re: Reel posture (Shoot)

Allot of people going to the L/H reels ......... I instead trained myself to cast with my left hand so I can reel with the right and not change hands.

Was just easier for me than to learn to cast with left hand, but who knows maybe I am the weird one?

The only issue with not having to change hands is you sometimes start reeling before the spool has stopped on a cast and do damage to gears.

Not sure about that one.. But, I use right handed baitcasters but left handed spinning reels. Back in my younger years, I broke my left elbow one summer. That made me cast right handed all year. The next summer I broke my right wrist so had to cast all year left handed... That made me learn to fish either way and has payed its dues ALOT... So i guess my best advice would be to make yourself fish with your weak arm and before long you will be able to cast either way....

+1 About the same thing happened to me. Broke my right arm and had to fish the summer casting left handed. I can cast either hand but still better casting right with a right handed reel.

    Rudy, I don't have a weak arm, just a support arm..lol :)

I have right handed baitcasters also, got them at a garage sale from some guy, (RICK). I use them and do the switch over and have tried the left hand cast but i'm much more precise with my right hand cast. I don't need to cast like my daughter and throw the darn thing in the water and make daddy go get it.

All of my spinning reels are still left hand reel.
I had also contemplated the fact of one side setting the hook harder than the other, could work both ways though, I might set it too hard or not enough if on my support side.

I also broke my right arm when I was a child, I was not fishing back then but I did learn to write and do everything with my left arm.

    Re: Reel posture (Shoot)

If i had to learn i would learn to use the left hand to reel. I am much better reeling with the right on baitcast (left with spinning). I can cast using either but right is a little better. I hate switching hands also. Id learn to cast with both, reel with whatever feels better. I usually spend some time during the winters pitching in the basement and trying to use the left more as it is more efficient

    Re: Reel posture (jjpatton)

I use right hand bait casters and left hand spinning as well. I've tried left hand bait casters before and the retrieve was akward and wobbly. I could never get used to it so I sold it. Anymore I have the baitcasters set right that I can change hands midcast and I don't lose much time.
