"NO Oil" Horn only at Idle & in gear??

    Hi guys.......me again. 1999 Johnson 225 HO Carb #J225HPLEEN.

I previously had the problem with the rebuilt carbs & new VRO that would surge while driving at high speed. Motor is now fixed.........however......

While fishing a tournament on Saginaw Bay.....we had about a 30 mile run each way. When we got back to the launch site.......we had to idle about a good 1/4 mile in a shallow channel. There was a slower boat in front of me so I had to let off the hot foot and let the boat just idle in gear. As soon as I did this.......the NO OIL horn went off. I immediately shut down the engine........waited about 10 seconds.......then started the motor again. No horn came on while I was pushing on the hot foot for a fast idle........but as soon as I let off the hot foot and let the boat idle on its own in gear..........the NO OIL horn came on once more. This was just after a 30 mile run at about 50 mph.........with NO problems???

I just checked the spark plugs........and all look good....very light brown.

I had plenty of oil..........about 3/4 tank full. I also have the "Low Oil" horn sounding EVERYTIME I start the motor............this is very annoying and has been going on since last year...........I just never got around to fixing it.

Any ideas on why the "No Oil" horn would go off........only when the boat was idling in gear???

I thank you in advance for your assistance.

Don't know on your current question, but what fixed the previous problem you posted on?

I had the same problem you have, the next time the alarm goes off, shut the motor down, and squeeze the oil bulb, although it may feel hard to the touch squeeze it,start the motor up again and see if the alarm goes off. Some people will tell you the VRO is on its way out,I believe the problem is a oil line sucking in air.. I am so use to priming the oil line everytime out that i haven't even bothered to check to see where the leak is.. And ,Oh, I only have to prime the oil bulb once the first intial time I start my motor up in the morning, the rest of the day it never goes off...

Apparently...........the first rebuild of the carbs either had bad "rubber".........or.....I some how got something in my gas that caused the rubber to expand.......causing the float needle to stick

So the carbs had to be rebuilt....once again My guess.....although I hate to bash......is that they were never rebuilt the first time....and what ever was used to clean the carbs the first time.....is what caused the rubber to go bad causing the need for the second so called rebuild.

But now my "no oil" horn goes off at idle............I'm no mechanic......but since my "Low Oil" horn has been going off at start up since last year and I never fixed it........this may be related.

    Guru's?? Any help??

Two different sensors Low Oil resides on the tank and you will have to replace it. No oil is on the VRO/OMS , remove the oil line at the pump and have someone pump the bulb on the oil tank. have them give it a few pumps and on the third pump attach the hose to the fitting and clamp off, have them release the bulb and give one more pump. Your problems should be fixed.

Make sure to position the oil bulb vertical so the arrow faces up, or you can get an air pocket inside the bulb if it is held horizontal, and that can cause intermittent NO OIL alarms in the future.

cooked good, ate good, and drank good and most of all, appreciated what the weekend was all about, paid my respects, decorated graves, and supported the VFW canteen. A good time was had by all.

I hope that yours went well!
