Question **2006 Yamaha HPDI 250 HELP**

So I have a question on my 2006 HPDI 250. I noticed about 4 months ago when I purchased the boat I had a erratic idle right at start up. it would jump up to 1000rpms, back down to 500 rpms etc.. Also, it will sometimes die when I start it up for the first time in the morning, only once on the first try. After about 2 minutes of warm up in idle, it runs fine and has a steady idle of 700 rpms with no erratic jump in rpms. I decided to change the LP fuel pumps, the clear canister fuel filter under the cowling, the yamaha water separator filter, the primer bulb, the fuel lines to the bulb and the spark plugs. Started it up yesterday with the replacments I did and it hasnt changed. I have checked for air leaks and there isnt any. One thing I did notice yesterday is that my bulb take about 4 pumps to get firm before startup; however, when the engine is running it is about have firm and not fully firm. The guy I purchased the boat from 4 months ago said he had all the filters changed out VST and metal cannister filter after VST.

My question is is the problems I am having just the nature of the beast or should my boat idle smooth at initial startup and not die at first start up try? If so, what else could cause this problem I am having? I have checked everything I know of per this sites suggestions and I am stuck on what else to inspect. Thanks!

There are more fuel filters you didn't change. There is one inside the metal tank (VST tank) on the side of the engine. There is a fuel pump in that tank, and at the bottom of the pump, is a round filter. That filter is known and most common filter to cause issues if dirty or clogged. Above that tank, there is a cylinder looking canister filter. That one should also be replaced. I bet after you replaced those filters your issues should be better.

Also, check to make sure that everything is synk-n-linked, meaning all butterflies in the throttle body are opening and closing evenly.

The primer bulb is not supposed to stay firm with the motor running, and won't be firm for the rest of the day after the initial start up. The purpose of priming the bulb before first start is just to prime the fuel system with fuel. Once the motor is running, the fuel pumps take over and draw the necessary fuel.

Good advise above but did you gap the plugs? Its also possible that you have high or flooding injectors. Majority of hpdi injectors flow too much fuel.

Also check TPS setting. It is not the nature of the beast. They idle on 4 cylinders, but its a steady idle. How does it run at WOT and at what RPM's?

It runs very good at WOT and turning around 5800 rpms @ 71mph - 72mph....No complaints on that end just at initial start up

After reading the thread you started a couple days prior to this thread, from the way that filter looked, I'd imagine the filters after this one, which are the ones I mentioned in my post above, will look worse than the one in the picture. That filter looks like it has never been changed by the previous owner, so I could only imagine what the other filters are like. I can almost guarantee you once the other filters are changed you will notice a major difference. If it were me, that would be the next thing to do.

If it runs great at WOT, I would probably have the injectors looked at.

You were right sir! The VST filter wasnt dirty; however, the seem was cracked so it wasnt doing its job at filtering trash. I then moved to the cannister filter and cut it open and looked at it and WOW! When I pushed on the filter screen it just broke! Horrible condition. I did not see any trash in it though, just REALLY dark in color. I am going to change the VST filter and the cannister filter today and PRAYING my problems will go away at idle.

Well she idles much better now. I still noticed a slight hicup every now and again, but it has improved a substantial amount. I think I am going to try and tackle the secret filters next since the picture that i posted of my cannister filter was disgusting, I cant see there not being any trash in at least a few secret filters. I saw on here where you can get the baset filters from NAPA for like $1 a piece. I believe that part number is CRB 215001 Can someone confirm this for me that has got them at NAPA before? Thanks

fishnhunt with your motor being an 06 I would pull the injectors and have them checked out. Send them to Wayne at hydro tec.

Yes, NAPA #CRB 215001 is the correct # for the HP pump secret filters and also for the filters on top of each fuel injector.

Good to hear the motor is running better. Like others have said, send those injectors to be cleaned. It is quite obvious no maintenance has ever been done on the fuel system on that motor, so those injectors are way overdue. I had mine done last year, and it made a huge difference in idle and overall performance. I sent mine to Brucato, and he did a great job. He will send you a printout of the injectors flow rate before and after, as well as replace all the basket filters. If you ask him, he will send you the basket filters needed to do the HP pump. Turnaround time was fast too, sent them beginning of week, and had them at my door by the end of the week. Definitely recommend Brucato!
