    Johnson J150GLEIS Fuel issue

I have a 91 Johnson J150GLEIS motor and today while on the lake after starting it stuttered and didn't want to stay running. Then when it did run it misfired, and then it finally shutoff and wouldn't restart again. After floating for a long time I remembered I had a pair of pliers on board so I removed the plugs and saw them covered in fuel. After I dried them off and went to crank it up in neutral and full throttle it fired up and ran for a short amount of time before flooding out. I believe either the float needle is stuck or the float itself just went bad. Several hours later after finally getting towed in and getting home it cranked up and ran for a short amount of time before flooding out. I looked for a rebuild kit so to speak because the colors on the gaskets for each carb bank are of a different color. One has the original gasket and the other side has an aftermarket gasket. It tells me someone before me did a half a$$ed job in rebuilding the carb so I'm asking would be it better to try and find a rebuild kit and just rebuild the whole carb or just try and fix the float issue. Is there a way to test to ensure i'm attacking the right symptom and not just wasting my hard earned money and time? Thanks all.

Update I just went out and took a look at the left bank, All were flooded of course and they drained after releasing the drain plug. The first Carb though still had the bowl full of fuel when I took it apart and the spring clip connecting the float to the needle is missing! Will this cause the symptoms I described earlier? I know there should be a clip there so without the clip am I correct in assuming the needle will not open up when the float goes up? What will that do?

A 91 with some original gaskets,, You answered your own question. rebuild them all. Hopefully the carb bowls are not warped or your looking at 6 of those. Better look at the Vapor Separator Tank "VST" cover and gasket as well. The high speed jets like to loosen up as well. Is that a 91 that never went back to be detuned? what head P/N on it?

The 1991 motors were a little bit over the HP limit and Merc and Yami complained so a recall was ordered and the 91 150's were recalled. If the owners complied the motors were detuned (horsepower dropped) by 15 -20 or so. The original heads were P/N# 335195. They were replaced with 338311. The main jets were possibly changed as well.

So if mine is 335195 then the HP is likely to be what? (aside from zero since I have a few carbs pulled off :)

About 168 HP. You are correct. The motor will not run well with no spring connecting the needle to the float bowl.

if it has what we call the hot heads,,,number will be casted in to head, if it has the replacement heads, it will be stamped, usually with white numbers

Also I should add that the electronic choke is causing a 20A fuse to blow under the cowling. If you just turn the key normal it's fine but as soon as push the key in to engage the choke it pops the fuse. Any ideas?

Don't sweat your heads. I'd be more concerned with the proper operation of the motor. If it isn't firing on all 6 correctly it wouldn't matter if you had nitrous oxide hooked to the motor it still isn't going to run.

Oh trust me I'm all about getting this thing running properly. Having a boat break down on the water absolutely sucks...not to mention embarrassing and frustrating.

Unplug the purple/white wire going to the primer solenoid and push in the key. If it pops the fuse again it's probably the ignition switch if not bad primer solenoid.

I read on the Cajun site, that you have been rewiring. Did you rewire on the ignition switch and not get the wires on the correct terminal?

Oh no I haven't with any ignition wires yet. Looks like I may need to now though. :)

    I'll test the solenoid also.

The fuse still popped so it's looking like the switch itself unless I missed something

You could disconnect the purple/white wire from the switch and test it, to see if it is grounded somewhere between the switch and primer. I would do that before buying a new switch.

The 337548 are the standard 150 HP heads, they are not from Fastrike or Intruder. You still have a great motor, just get the carbs and primer circuit fixed and you will be very happy.

Well let's hope it's the carbs that's causing this thing to not run and flood out.
