    150 Intruder High RPM Miss

    I have a 1992 Evinrude Intruder 150 HP Model # VE150GLENC.

I bought this boat a few weeks ago and tried it out. It had a bad miss when it reached around 4600 to 5100. When it gets up to around these RPM's it starts missing and falls back to about 4000 RPM's maybe even lower sometimes.

Since then I have put new spark plugs (QL 78YC), checked compression (90-92 all cylinders), added fuel additives, sprayed about a half of can of Mercury Power Tune Engine Cleaner in the carburetors while it was running, changed to a lower pitch prop (23" 4-blade) & took off automatic oiler and mixed the oil manually.

It is not getting hot and has good water presure, but I still have the same high RPM miss?

I guess the power pack is next, but that is where it gets a little confusing for me. From what I have read on here and other forums, it seems as though there are several different do's and don'ts about replacing them.

For instance...OUTBOARDPARTS.COM talks about certain power packs will not work unless they have a certain colored sleeve on the stator or sensor. Other forums have suggested there are several power packs available but many are junk and are bad investments.

My question is...am I on the right track with the power pack and what else do I need to replace to try and solve my problem.

    Thanks, Mark R

Do all the plug wires look good?

Check the timing wheel. The new ones come with a stronger washer. I had to replace mine last month. Brought the motor back to life. Check your throttle linkage rollers while your there. Alot cheaper than a pp and easy to check.

Being a 92', I would check the wires first, before buying a lot of parts, and if you do not have the eqipment to check voltage, buy an ignition coil and try it in all three locations to see if the problem disapears. Sounds like a 1 cylinder issue. An ignition coil is cheaper than a ppack, so are the wires.

This motor has black plug wires. I think it should have the gray ones, so I will change them and try it again.

There was a service bulletin back then about shimming the timing wheel because they changed design in '92. In some cases the wheel can wobble and affect the high speed timing.

    See a knowledgeable dealer.

Is there a way I can check the 3 coils and the power pack while they are off the engine?

Do you happen to have a reference number for that bulletin, or a part number for the newer washer? I have noticed that the wheel on mine seems loose, eventhough the bolt is tight.
